I have to admit that not having a photo does defeat the purpose of having an identifiable photo. Wouldn't it be better if the identification was done on the admin side - when you sign up you put your whole proper name in as well as your forum monicker and the administrators can see a list of these and know who is who?

Not so sure that members knowing who each other is, is a good idea, especially if something goes beyond the forum when they can identify who said what to them... If people want to know who someone is they can ask by pm.

From some things already said on this subject I get the feeling it could cause more angst than it prevents.

Maybe the confusion is because there are two purposes:

- A profile picture to help identify who is whom (probably restricted to logged in users)
- A forum avatar to "express your personality" (if you have one)

Since the forum avatar pictures are limited to a tiny size, they aren't a lot of use for identification.
