Calshot

Postby Phil H » Mon May 17, 2010 11:12 am

Yesterday I took my son to a session at the velodrome (Sutton offered Redhill some spaces). He really enjoyed it once he got going and had the speed and confidence to get on the banking. It looks fun. There were parents spaces in the afternoon, but I couldn't stay to have a go myself (boo).

Is it something ACC ever consider organising? I've never tried track cycling but it looks fun and I have been known to eat Bran Flakes.

We've done at least a couple of club trips to Calshot in the past. The general idea is drum up some interest, find a suitable date, hire the track, arrange a coach (I mean a bloke not a bus), share lifts, have some fun.

I would have a go at HH first, get the basics down? Although the banking isn't comparable at all!

Herne Hill is probably also warmer.

The kids seemed to cope with Calshot OK. My lad was very nervous but got the hang of toeclips and fixie braking very quickly. Some of the older/more confident ones were really flying.

It terrified me! Went on an ACC trip a few years back, yep it was freezing.

I went on a weekend clinic run by Lee Povey and Dave Le Grys a couple of months ago at Calshot and it was fantastic. For £150 we were provided with 2 nights accomodation, 3 meals a day, group ride on both sat and sun mornings out in the New Forest followed by 4 hrs of coaching on sat and sun. I went in a complete novice who had never even ridden a fixed let alone contemplated the steep banks of a velodrome. Within a very short period of time the boys had me doing timed flying laps, group excercises and even having a go at madison handovers. I have now bought me a track bike so yeah I will be up for it.

We've done this before. If you book the track for a couple of hours, provide your own coach and get a group of about 10 or 12 it works out at about £15 a head (I think). I would definitely be up for another crack at it. It may not be as warm as Herne Hill, but it's always dry and it's much more fun.

In fact, Phil, I was down that way at the weekend and had a peek at what was happening on the track while my daughter was investigating the climbing wall. I didn't see you there - probably because I wasn't expecting to.
