[quote="Dombo"]Cheers Dave. Fairly unstructured at the moment. I'll try the intervals and riding through the pain and see what happens. I seem to have been just "getting the miles in" and rubbish miles at that.
Just looked at my Dragon time compared to others and felt I could have done better.
Well here's the good news Dombo, because you haven't
really trained so to speak for the Dragon you stand to improve quite a bit if you're prepared to the work in. I agree with threshold intervals & VO2max intervals mention by Kieran and Dave respectively and pushing yourself harder (Andrew).
Your ride with a faster groups once per week is good training but it's not enough. You really need a minimum of two other quality workouts per week. Say a 10 mile TT /intervals/chain gang and then perhaps a solo or small group fast tempo ride(18/19mph) for 1-2 hours. You need to decide how much training time you have available - the less time available you have the harder you should be riding.
Be wary of too many plodding 3-5 hour rides they're often quite an inefficient way to train - lots of free wheeling punctuated with brief moments of exertion for hills. Then it takes a couple of days to recover. Anyway this ultimately needs to be put into some kind of plan building up to the DRAGON. The bottom line is if you adopt the same old
'just ride approach next year you can't expect nothing but the same result.
