No 19 this time Jon, I had a nice weekend in the lakes with my wife though:D

The Levens 10 course is indeed a super fast one just a bit unfortunate the wind was blowing quite a bit.

Great start with a rolling decent to get the speed up and then the rest is pan flat out and back, the turn roundabout is big so you can stay on the aero bars without slowing :D

Before I knew it I had crossed the line.Hard headwind on the way out that didn't materialise into a tail one on the way back and I was struggling to keep the speed up to a good pace.

Finish with a 21.38 so was pretty disappointed with my time, now looking forward to the F20/10 next weekend, where I'm gonna go even quicker :D

Not that I've done the following myself, but would Derny paced training on Thursday nights, at herne hill, help you further, to achieve your goal ?

19 of sorts, 19th overall according to the results so well done. Didn't look like a fast day with Mark Holton being the only sub 20 rider.

My goal will be more modest for now, to get sub 22. Starting on that course but two weeks later. I'm getting the same bike as you George : )

top one sylv we can travel up together.

I was about 314w at levens

I think ill have to average over 350w for a 19 though so a way to go yet :D

Maybe not depending on your set up. Mick St Leger who is a has done a few 19s quoted that he was averaging about 330w when he was racing. He also a big advocate of pacing. I think one quote was 'it should feel like your setting off on a paper round' for the first couple of miles. Patience and training will get you there George I have no doubt. It is a shame that RichV's not about anymore and you could have picked his brains :D

I am not so sure about this now, especially for a 10. You might not be able to make up the time "lost" later on, however faster you are going. Was reading something online that went that way too, can't remember where.

I'm not even sure I should ease up a bit to recover on the downhill bits like at Holmwood now. When I see other faster people's GPS files, they have reached much higher speeds than me on the dowhills. This is a place where a powermeter would good to use, as a huge difference in watts will not make much difference in speed, so it's quite easy to overdo it just going on feel.

On any of the 'fast' courses on a 'fast' day I would agree absolutely with Dominic. If you're racing without a power meter you've got to appreciate the effects of fatigue, 350w in minute 1 is a doddle compared to 350w in minute 19. If you're pacing power evenly then your first few minutes will feel slow, you will go really quickly down slopes and take your time up slopes. The fast courses are usually pretty flat and the fast days are windless and an even power profile is always likely to be quickest. Overdo the first few miles and you're gasping and grappling for the next 8 rather than cruising round at maximum power. The interesting thing is how much variation you can build in for lumpy/windy courses and whether free-wheeling can be quicker :D

Good luck on the F20 George, possibly the fastest course in the country in non-float conditions (its 'speed' is mainly traffic related). Just don't overcook the first couple of miles :!:
