What are the best chain lubricants?

Postby Toks » Mon Jun 14, 2010 5:27 pm

My current one seems to make the chain quite sticky after a few days. Thanks in advance, Toks

I use the same one as Sylv. Used to use white lightening but that does get a bit sticky.

[quote="Sylv"]And so does Alberto

I bet you it you asked him he woud'nt have a clue

I am currently using an oil from Decathlon. Have used 3 in 1 before and to be honest I can't tell the difference. As long as you remember to wipe the chain after I can't see any issues. Saying that I have used White Lighting and found it rubbish, doesn't stay on the chain.

What are you using Toks?

White Lighting is the best, but has to be applied correctly

+1 for White Lightning on both my mtb and road.

I did try Finish Line Pro Gold on my road bike but although it goes on nice and yellow, in a matter of seconds it's turned into black gunk and you're left with noob tatoos all down your right calf.

I agree White Lightening seems pretty good. I am currently trying the Finish Line Wax Lubricant and it seems to pick up dirt and the chain does not stay well lubricated for very long. With White Lightening make sure the chain is clean, then put a drop on each link of the chain. Make sure you get some of the waxy stuff on each link. Then when finished leave for a bit and then get a cloth and wipe the excess from the outside of the chain. At least that is what I do, is that right Dave?

Cheers

I once read that diesel is good: take chain off, clean it with chain cleaner then put it in a container of diesel, shake it about, hang it up to drain off then put it back on bike.
My station bike uses 3-in-one, which seems to be fine also.
I have noticed on the CR that most people's rear mechs, cassettes etc are nice and shiny, whereas mine aren't :(

I give the chain a wipe after every couple of rides and give it a spray with GT85.

Stays really clean and doesn't seem to attract much gunk. Think the key to it is to wipe it clean regularly.

Every chain lubricant works just fine you just have to wipe the chain with a rag regularly to stop it ending up like Paul H's dirty drivechain :D

First off, make sure the chain is clean from any grease and old oil, tend to use degreaser applied with an old paint brush (tip picked up from watching the mechanics @ Selsdon Park Hotel when the Tour was here) Then dry with a clean rag. Put the chain in the big ring, shake bottle and then apply a drop to each link, wipe off any excess as you go. You can then allow the wax to dry before giving the chain a wipe. Don't mix with oil based lubricants.

Squirt also do a good wax based lub

If you're using oil based lubs I used to clean the chain, flush out any residue by spraying with GT85, dry, and then applying oil to each link. Found the Finish Line Pro Road the smoothest, but it left the chain all black after the first ride!! Didn't look very professional

Baby wipes are very good for getting your chain nice and clean before applying lubricant. Probably not used by pro mechanics.
