'front mech wearing out'

Postby Brian Nolan » Thu Dec 29, 2005 10:52 am

Hi there,

being a bit clueless regarding bike maintenance, ( I only know how to ride them & clean them ! ) I wanted to ask if 'front mechs ' can wear out ?
I am having trouble shifting from middle to outer chainring ( Shimano Sora )and a shop near me reckoned my front mech was getting a bit knackered.. Do they wear out - or are they telling fibs ? I thought the front mech was just a spring, bit of metal & a cable ? hope someone can put me right on this one..

thanks - and I hope you guy's who are off out today have a good ride..
I used the car this morning as it felt too cold to get on the bike at 6:45 !

yes, the pivots can wear, making the whole thing a bit wobbly, and also can seize up.

give it a good clean and lube and replace the cable inner and outer before declaring it dead though.
