Hillingdon Vets

This happens every other Wednesday. I have been meaning to go for some time but was otherwise engaged on Wednesday evenings. Got there by train, Clapham Junction the Brentford and a 5 mile ride. I was pleased to se Toks and one other that I knew among the 50 or 60 or so contestants. These events are part of a series with points on offer and entrance is £8 after a £3 series fee for LVRC members. Riders are 40+ and go off in one group and it was reasonably swift. The format is 1 hour + 5 laps.

I felt OK sitting in the group and whilst there were a number of attacks I never felt like I was going out the back. It broke up a bit for the last lap but I managed to stay in contact but lost the will to be 40th dashing for the line and let others come round me. Still I had achieved what I set myself, to ride conservatively and finish with the main group. Toks probably had a more active race taking part in several digs off the front. Average speed was 26mph and we covered nearly 30 miles. Good fun!

I guess I meant competitors, although as the resident celebrity contestant has a certain ring!

Well done Alan, I see you even got to practice some Spanish at the end with Edgar from Finchley CC. You may have noticed in the VET races breakaway attempts aren't imediately snapped up by the bunch unlike in 3/4 races. In contrast riders tend to sit back a touch more and see if they can bridge across to a break rather than dragging the whole pack across. Not a bad average speed considering how windy it was. Hope to see you at a few more races
