Help request - Beastway marshalling 14th July

Postby Grahame » Thu Jul 01, 2010 12:43 pm

Dear clubmates,

We are a "host"/promoting club for a round of the Beastway midweek mountainbike race league at Redbridge Cycling Centre (AKA Hog Hill).

Our turn to promote - ie provide the marshalling cover is 14th July. We need to provide 6 marshalls - 2 to help with lap scoring and 4 for on-course marshalling.

It doesn't clash with any of the road-based circuit races that I know of, so is a prime opportunity for road racers to give a bit back to the sport without impacting on your race schedule. Mountainbike racing is fun to watch, as there's always something going on rather than long periods of nothing in sight then a bunch whizzing past. You won't have to argue with drivers/worry about manning a junction, and you get a radio to play with for the evening.

You need to be at Redbridge Cycling Centre by 7pm (ideally 6:30pm), and can expect to be finished by about 9pm (racing finishes at about 8:30pm, after which marshalls are "invited" to help dismantle the course marking). We often stop at a pub on the way back for a swift social drink.

If you want to volunteer for this, please let me know below so I can arrange for the fivers to help with the transport costs.

The nearest tube stations are Fairlop and Hainault, both on the District line. Hainault has a bus service to close to Hog Hill, or I can provide lifts from Fairlop.

Cheers,

Grahame

Grahame,

I should be able to help with this, need to check home diary first.

For others interested it takes approx 1 hour from city centre to cycle to Hog Hill and I made it home from Hog Hill to Forest Hill in an hour last week.

Cheers Kieran, and Marco who has volunteered via a PM.

4 spaces left for those who wish to put something back into our sport.

Oh, and there are two TVs in the clubroom that WILL be showing the TdF coverage during the afternoon, and the evening highlights show if you are worried about missing your fix of watching the professional pincushions at work between Chambery and Gap.

Sandwiches, cake, tea and coffee are available in the clubhouse as well, or feel free to bring something to contribute to an agreeable picnic before the race.

You can put my name on the list.

All the better if I can get a lift from Fairlop and then another back to Croydon area (or at least a train station) after. Where I work now it would take too long to cycle there.

Aodan.

Great fun but can't help out this time, sorry Grahame. If like me you are a sensitive fellow, or lady, take some insect spray as there are a number of midgeies there.

Assuming there's only one of Ivor helping, then we have:
Ivor, Aoden, Kieran, and Marco.

2 more spaces available.

I will be able to provide a lift to a station somewhere suitable.

Grahame,

I'm more than happy to help; if I can cadge a lift back to (near)croydon that would be even better.

I will be racing at Beastway on the 14th as part of my final build up to the national XC champs on the Sunday. I can give a lift back to croydon for 3 people and 2 bikes if needed. Normally get back to Croydon for about 1015-1030pm. Let me know if you need a lift. Cheers.

So, pre-volunteered marshals (and therefore eligable for £5 "contribution towards costs") are:

Ivor, Aoden, Kieran, Marco, Daniel, Ed, and (via an email) Tamar.

I can provide transport to either a tube station or somewhere like London Bridge, but Croydon is quite a long detour for me.

Ed, I should be fine to get you back to Beckenham, though.

The "expectation" is that marshals will help take the course down after the race, this is usually completed by about 9pm, the normal routine is that I stop riding round (I won't dignify it with the term "racing") and wait until the race winner finishes, then I ride round the course as the last rider to let you know that you can start taking the course down - Serge, I hope you are OK to wait a few minutes to allow this to happen before playing taxi driver back to Croydon.

If you can be there before 7pm, then we'll assign marshaling positions. Earlier is better, and gives plenty of time for a cup of tea and slice of cake before the action starts.

See you on Wednesday.
