National championship 100, 11/07/10

Off to Norfolk for the 100 mile TT championship, 4 laps of a course on the A11 west of Norwich. Quite a stiff breeze blowing from the west, so it was going to be a headwind/tailwind situation and repeat 4 times. Forecast to be a scorcher too; it was 18 degrees and rising at 7am. 5 miles into the headwind at 21mph to the first turn, then got shifting along at 28 to 30mph with the tailwind. All seemed to be going OK until unlucky mile 13, when I punctured my front tub. I was carrying a spare, so prised off the knackered one and fitted the new one as rider after rider swooshed past me. If this had been 13 to go rather than 13 in I'd have carried on to finish, but this early it put me in the wrong frame of mind so I took the next exit and headed back to the HQ for a DNF.

Bad luck and understandable to DNS once you know you've lost so much time so early.

You must have a masochistic streak this year racing 10s the day before a 100, well with the SERC.

"Quit? You know, once I was thinking about quitting when I had a flat in the first mile of a 100mile time trial, it was raining cats n dogs freezing cold plus it was my first 100 tt. But with the love and support of my friends and red van, I got back on the bike and I finished that 100 in a new pb for me.

But I'm sure you had a good reason to quit.

Well, I guess if a person never quit when the going got tough, they wouldn't have anything to regret for the rest of their life.
But good luck to you. I'm sure this decision won't haunt you forever."

Dodgeball!!
