TdF Stage 11 (Spoiler?)

Postby Phil H » Thu Jul 15, 2010 8:41 pm

Looking at the replay, it seems like Renshaw was more using his head to keep Dean from forcing him into the barrier. Doesn't look like a major infringement. I know I've not raced, but if someone was pushing me towards the barrier at speed, I'd get a bit arsy too. The second offence where he looks left and then moves left onto Farrar seems worse. But does the punishment fit the crime? Seems harsh.

And from last year we know that Cav can win stages without a leadout, but that was then. Has he become dependent upon Renshaw now?

Yeah I'd agree that the head-nodding was more defensive

They slow-mo'd it on the ITV4 coverage and Boardman made exactly that point

Good job by Cavendish regardless

It was a long one for Bingo but I dare say the tailwind helped.

I don't think he can possibly get green unless he starts picking up some intermediates. You can say "Oh, it's not my style" all you like, but do you want to win or not?

Its not the first time HTC have caused controversy during a sprint finish and I guess that was in the back of their minds.

Cav's unhappy Don't know what they are on about, no one came down!

Think he'll and the rest of the team will be so angry about this that they'll storm every sprint from now on. We know how anger gives Cav superpowers. He might even start chasing the Green jersey.

Although the second block incident was worse Renshaw has a habit of using his head and nutting people in a sprint. The organisers tend not to mind a bit of shoving and leaning but repeated head-butting doesn't go down well.

The photo in this post clearly indicates why the head work was necessary to avoid being blocked. See where the elbow was deliberately put across in order to block, and MORE Importantly look at the angle of the front wheel. Deliberately cutting in, in order to block.
Here I think the use of the head was justified: just like yesterday's sprint.

Personally I think we can learn from this and make the Club Run sprint a full-contact affair.

anyway calling it a headbutt is a bit much, more a shove with the head. Renshaw may have blocked Tyler (accidently or not) but he wouldn't have taken the win from Cav, if anything, at a long stretch, he might have taken some green jersy points from alejet.

I must concur too. Of course, there was one more head push than was strictly necessary, but overall it was not a disproportionate reaction given the completely unnecessary squeeze by Julian Dean on Renshaw. Had Renshaw not retaliated, who knows how much more room Dean would have taken and the consequences.

I can only only draw one of two conclusions - either the commissaires are a bunch of d*ckless half-wits or considering the rather debateable relegation of Cavendish to last place in last year's stage something machiavellian is going on in places we don't understand re. Cavendish's green jersey chances.
