A pretty fast field for this event; I scraped in as 7th reserve and got a call on Thursday evening to say I was off in place of number 9.
Got a bit lost finding the HQ in Newmarket, as I hadn't been to it before. Once I'd got my number I drove back to the lane near the start to avoid any further navigational incidents. Was rather windy as I was getting ready; at one point the wind got hold of disk wheel which was leaning against the car, and blew it across the grass verge. Then it wazzed it down for about 10 minutes so I hid in the car for as long as possible. It eased off it time for a 15 minute warm up, and I got to the start with 30 seconds to go.
Was hard going on the outward leg; mostly headwind with a few gusty sidewinds thrown in for some handling excitement. I was glad I didn't have a really deep front wheel on today. Went around the turn at 32 minutes then picked up the tailwind for the faster run back to the finish. 1:00:25 which equals my seasons best. A calmer day and I would have gone under the hour. Ho hum.
