Hellingley 3rds

Postby Paul H » Sun Jul 25, 2010 5:18 pm

After getting in various unsuccessful breaks during the race, I managed to diesel of the front on my own with about 13 miles to go, got joined by another rider after about 5 miles, we worked together to the end and I got beat up the short hill at the end finishing 2nd.

A big thanks to Toby who did a good job slowing down the chase for me and finished about 10th. Toby was looking very strong today and also got in numerous breaks but unfortunately there were plenty of riders happy to chase them down.

Andrew and Darren who I think have just been promoted to 3rd cat both did well and finished in the bunch.

Cheers

Well done Paul - both you and Toby looked strong all morning. I didn't realise that you had managed to get into a break as I just clung onto the back of the main group. Felt ok for three of the five laps until the cramp set into my thighs going up one of the larger drags. Laps four and five were really tough but I managed to hang on to the main chasing group, which seem to be getting smaller and smaller as we went on.

The final half lap things started to get much quicker and I grabbed Andy W's wheel about a mile from the finish who was soaring through the field until he managed to navigate us through a massive pot hole - I thought I had punctured after the hearing a large bang but the bike seemed to be ok. Andy continued to power up the final last drag (handy the finish line being on top of a hill  ) and I couldn't hold on. All of a sudden Andy seemed to be treading water and I was pulling him back - not my strength - he had a mechanical 50 metres from the finish - his front and rear brakes had locked onto the rims...! The bang must have been from his bike

Anyway - a good experience and would hope that it was a top 20 finish??? Toby got 6th in the end I think?

Look forward to some more of these

Its not far from Eastbourne. Its a Surrey League event and I think they have used it before.

It was a short "sprinters" hill. As you know, I am a one pace monkey. If I was serious about road racing, I would work on it.

A bit of a turbo diesel though Paul. Good result and glad to read you're still making it an interesting race and forcing the issue. I can't imagine reading a report from you that says, "sat in the bunch and followed wheels".

I expect you'd be the rider wearing the red number in a stage race Paul

Who beat you to the line?
