Miserable Morning

Postby LeeS » Sat Jul 31, 2010 9:18 am

Did anybody else think it was a bit wet this morning?
Do people generally do their own thing on days like this or do you meet up later on and if so is anybody going for a ride ?

Yep. Thin drizzle, greasy roads after prolonged dry spell, so left road steed in the garage.
Had a prolonged breakfast then planned to collect mtb from Nirvana in Westcott and head up into the woods of Leith Hill. Nice and sandy on that side of the A25 so it drains well and sheltered by trees too. Unfortunately car battery's flat so awaiting AA man :(

It was wet and slippery. Almost had an off at the little roundabout in Banstead - front wheel went even though I was tiptoeing round. Managed to unclip and push myself back upright. Even more cautious after that, but I could feel the bike sliding at times.

Went for Grahame's 17s because I thought I was still feeling the ToBM. Easy-ish ride down. We lost a few of the new people early on so Grahame stayed back with them. Thought I had enough to win the sprint on a long one but the normal power wasn't in my legs so I didn't get a gap. Bah.

It dried out for the ride back. Waited a while for the back markers but go bored and decided to try to catch Elliot & Bridget to return Elliot's water bottle that he'd left in the cafe. They had quite a head start so it took until Redhill to catch them. Then a high (for me) speed burn up the A23 to Nonnas to ingest dangerous quantities of caffeine while sitting in the sun.

We only had one off that I heard about. Looked like damage to shorts & skin but nothing more serious (hopefully). Lucky really because it was damned slippery - probably irresponsible to have a club run in that weather, someone might sue etc.

I waited until about 9.30 before setting out by which time the rain had cleared. Went by CSS on the off chance and as nobody was there did the Hilly 50 route and met the Alternatives at the bottom of Box on my way back. Everybody else seemed to go out at the normal time which makes me think I might have been a bit of a fanny this morning for leaving later.

Had a pooh day too Dombo. Driving out for a TT and got caught in traffic on the M25, A3, and then the A31. That finally did it for me as I was now too late to meet my start time. A wasted day and I'd been due to start behind 11 women too which would've been nice.

Well, the girls were out in force this morning, including quite a few newbies. Doesn't matter what the weather does, we always meet same time - it's up the individual whether they come out or not.

It was just a bracing dampness in the air  Quite nice even though it seemed to stick to my glasses and pool there. Soon all dried out though, as observed, it was a little greasy out there on the roads. Hope the guy who fell got cleaned up OK.

As there hadn't been any takers bar me for Phil's rider over Farthing, I decided to take it really easy and take the beginners out as there were quite a few, along with Tim. Much easier to manage when there's at least two of you. Quite a mix of riders with Gina who was a seasoned CTC rider from my old section through to a couple who were just getting the hang of riding a bike and a guy on a rather knackered mountain bike.

Took a slightly shorter route to the cafe by turning left at Parkgate and came over Stan Hill into Charlwood but it was nice pootling along at the back, making sure everyone was OK and giving out the occasional bit of advice. Reduced numbers for the return as a couple decided to return via Box Hill. Again rear marker apart from a good sprint over the Reigate Golf Club to make sure one of the riders made the left turn in case Tim hadn't stopped to wait.

After last weekend's exertions I think it was just what I needed, no real hills and no trying to go fast, just sitting in a mostly high gear taking it easy.

Toks, 'fraid nobody was out to check my butt had got any slimmer but my so-called friend had thought my bum looked big in the ToBM photos :x Anyway, I'm only rated as having the third best bum in the club and I'm sure with all the new girls coming in I'll slip down the ratings  Oh well, never mind, it's how I'm built :D

While awaiting AA man to fix car I partook of some GTA4 action the old PS3. With an uncanny and seamless link to another thread on this forum the game had a bank robbery similar to that in Heat (worth staying awake at least to this bit, Lee). After much excitement the AA man arrived, fixed car and I went off to Leith and Holmbury Hills for some top mtb fun. All round a pretty good day :D

Amy: I think it's the angle of the photos that tends to exaggerate it. On the rare (kidding) occasions I was behind you, I had no trouble seeing round you.

Try a motorbike shop Amy, there's some good stuff you get for visors which I've used and makes the water bead and run off. Which reminds me I've run out so need to get some more, let me know if you want some and I'll get some for you.

Before I got a Shoei pinlock lid and visor, I used to use this stuff called Cat Crap (!)
You smear it on the inside of the visor and it works a treat.

P.s I wouldn't recommend using actual cat crap.

A gentleman never tells, of course your bum was checked out ...I thought that I could race at Bletchingly this afternoon but perhaps I've been a little overzealous with my riding this week and should've given myself more of a rest after TOBM. I did take off 24 hours and did a few steady rides but my skinny legs felt heavy and quite sore so another day offf the bike for me. Stef was probably a no show because she had (I feel)too much red wine last night nevertheless she managed a late morning's ride around Regents Park.

er...I hope you're not suggesting a woman cyclist should have a skinny flat climbers arse

I use Sun Dog as an all round glasses anti mister but when it's raining I found the visor stuff (like rain-x for windscreens) works better on the outside. Misty days are often the worst, those ones where it's like riding in a cloud as the inside can fog up and the outside just gets hundreds of tiny droplets on it. Used to be a nightmare but with the magic potions on the double glazing it's fine in all but the worst days.

Thanks, Andrew, the visor stuff sounds worth a try. If you don't mind getting me some when you stock up. It was what I call sticky rain this morning - doesn't look like much but soaks you anyway.

Yep, last time I looked I was female

Phil, I would've thought you could just look over the top

Got the bike out of the motor this morning thinking "it's showtime yeah clubrun let's have it" held the back wheel up to change gear and the cable snapped.
Didn't have a replacement in the toolbox so game over. :(
Rain was get a little heavier at that point.

Read your post Lee and true I was down but not out.
Anyway got online had a look at what else was going on. Herne Hill ? Hog Hill?

Herne Hill was the sensible option but I wanted the workout so Hog Hill it was.
Not quite there yet with fitness after having a chest infection/cold but stayed with the group for most of the race.
I love it other there and cant wait to get back.

  I read that back in my head and with a northern accent....in the style of Alfred Wainwright. Not sure why.

Should have got over to Hog Hill. The womens race had the biggest turn out.
