Boris Bike Challenges

Postby Andrew G » Thu Aug 05, 2010 7:33 pm

At work today we came up with an idea...Boris Bike Challenges :D .

Rules:
Any challenge must be simple, easy, open to anyone with a bit of fitness who can ride a bike (so open to all the gym bunnies).
Challenges must be completed in full office attire, suits and sensible shoes. You can't take your jacket off or slip on a pair of trainers.
Highway code rules must be obeyed.
All challenges must be completed within 30 minutes.
Cost of entry is £1 per person being your daily Boris bike registration and first 30 minutes.

We came up with a couple.

Challenge 1
The sprint TT

Find a suitable short loop of about a mile in length near your office/Boris Bike stands, the one we worked out is nice and simple and over 50% is on one way streets.
Each rider is timed to do a simple short TT on the Boris Bike.
Enhancement could include a racing TT start where you stand on the pavement and have to de-dock your bike before setting off, and introducing handicapping times.

Challenge 2
The distance Gamble

Check out the map of docking locations and select the furthest one you think you can reach in your free 30 minutes. You then have to get there before your time runs out or you pay the penalty, literally.
This could run with side bets and odds based on the rider and the distance gamble they take.
The rider has to bet on themselves.

Got anymore to add? :D

Brilliant :D

Here are some ideas...

The distance challenge
Choose 2 docking stations at a reasonable distance from each other
The challenge is to get the shortest possible journey between the two
You can use any route you like (whether on-road or down steps etc.)
Will require a GPS or (iPhone or Android phone etc. with GPS functionality)

Borienteering (TM)
Navigate your way around a series of Boris stations in the quickest possible time
Make them far enough apart to allow people to choose winning routes etc.

The Borathlon
Swim across the Thames (like Matthew Paris)
Get out at a transition stage near a Boris station
Ride around town for a bit in your budgie smugglers looking a bit stupid
(That one needs some work...)

Boriscombing
Ride as far as possible along the river when the tide is out
(I know you can do it in Putney near me but not sure about in town... Doesn't a beach appear every so often?)
(I admit that this is a bit of a weak idea too...)

The "bleep" test
Undock a bike
Go to another docking nearby station
Dock the bike
Undock a different bike
Go back to the original docking station
Repeat over a time period of your choosing (e.g. 5 minutes)
Then your fellow competitor has a go...
