There seems to have been a dearth of Club Run reports recently. What's up? Is nobody having fun any more? Nothing anyone wants to share?

Anyway the Training Group was the usual, sociable, laugh a minute jaunt down to the cafe. Fortunately Matt suggested through & off once we'd climbed out of Reigate, which meant everybody had a play into the nagging headwind.

We didn't need that finish line camera this week, eh Andy?

No stop at the cafe for me, but a decent ride back with Andy E and Peter making very agreeable company.

I know what you mean Keith. It's a shame as I always enjoy reading CR reports as they give a nice flavour of things, particularly if folk from different groups do a write up. Shows the broad spectrum of abilities and desires catered for.

My first club run in months having more or less wound up my racing season, apart from one weekend in a couple of weeks. Decided on a nice gentle ride in the 18s and set off with Mark McL's group. We sat on the front for a while and then called some rotations through once we'd got past Reigate Heath to let some others have a taste of the wind and a chance for a bit of inter-group meet and great :D .

It was nice to catch up with some old and new faces, and we had a good run down to the cafe in a good group with everyone riding sensibly making it very enjoyable.

The run back was a bit more lively as I left with Rob W who got itchy legs on that murderously bumpy road and then kept the pace high to the church. After the church it was a bit more itchy leg action and a good run in to Croydon, where I stopped at GBs with Mark for a bit of carry-on action revolving around his stem :P .

A quick reminder some people heard as some of us were leaving the cafe about the Isle of Wight trip. The Isle of Wight is known as Bike Island and for good reason, it's a fantastic place for cycling. Amy and Phil are doing a road ride and Tamar and I are doing a MTB ride and we'd welcome as many as possible to join us for the weekend. Details are in the IOW post above but basically Saturday 2nd Oct is ride day, best bet is go down on Friday. Stay in B&B in Yarmouth and meet in Yarmouth Square at 9.30am on Saturday morning. Once back, showered, and once again presentable dinner in a pub in Yarmouth and a good social session swapping yarns and tall tales. Saturday can go on should you wish as there's a place in Yarmouth open after chucking out time at the pubs. Sunday is home time, again whenever you want depending on ferry time and sightseeing you may want to do. All in it's a cheap and very enjoyable weekend not to far away in distance but very scenic and a World apart from the busy roads of Croydon, and chav free :D . Any questions about ferries and B&Bs etc just ask, although google will answer them pretty quickly.

This is where the best club run was today  :D :D Great days off roading. Trails just about perfect I'd say.

Colin and I got the train down, and did three (I think) goes round yogurt pots before meeting up with Shaun and Marco. Marco showed us the inner yogurt pot loop and then we bombed down Telegraph. Love it! About 3/4 way down turned off and Marco led us down a really exciting single track with plenty of swoopy descents and twists through the woods. We then tackled an insanely steep bridlepath back up to the Holmwood viewpoint. Two goes of the outer ring of yogurt pots. What next? Barry Knows Best! Never done this before - it's a cracking long steppy twisty fast trail - just brilliant

We dropped into Peaslake and went to tackle Pitch Hill. I ran right out of gas and just fell away on the climb. Had to turn back to the village for some food, I was cattled About three hours of hard work left me right out of gas.

After a refuel Colin and I pootled back to Gomshall station and away home we went.

I left my legs on the Surrey Hills today>Knackered and I loved it!

Thanks guys for a super fun day of excellent off roading. Good work to Colin for setting this up. Been too long since we were down that way.

I had a fab day out on the club run today with the 15s, firstly bumping into the delightful Joyce at EC.St, It was good to see her, followed by a quick,
( short cut ) run up to Charlwood Cafe, and on to Box Hill with a mix of what I think was the 17s, the lovely 17s boy's and girl's, kindly waiting for us at the top, to greet Rima, to a chorus of, "Happy Birthday" for her, we urged the 17s to go on as we wanted to have tea and cake, ( Bread Pudding ) mine was carried by John (Smiley) Thank You for that! - Rima carried her own, a lovely ride back down to CS to meet the 17s again, and coffee and a long discussion about smoking, and next weeks Brighton Ride.. which it appears we ALL intend to do, Thank's to all who supported the 15s today, sorry for all the detail, it's my first time here, but I had a great day as always.

"Oh No - Where did it all go wrong!!!" Would be the heading - My ride started with my usual warm-up from home and all felt good. Having raced at Hillingdon in the 3/2/1/E group and then having trained heavily throughout the week I was contemplating a ride with the 18's or 19's as my legs were still aching. But, the call for the training group came and, reacting like a teenage conscript, I joined the ranks.

Early alarm bells rang (too early as it happens) as I struggled to peak the steps in sync with the group. 'No matter' I thought as I rejoined along the straight as the group reached the lights. No one seemed to notice my momentary absence (or at least they graciously ignored it)... And we were off again into the lanes when the call for through and off came. In short this finished what little glycogen reserves were left and so by Newdigate Road I dropped from 27-28 to 13mph in an instant. DROPPED! This was not a heart pounding 'red-line' sort of drop just legs that felt too heavy to move at the required rate type of dropped.

Not be confused with ‘bonking’ or ‘hitting the wall’ (I have only hit the wall once and never want to experience that again where average speed drops to 2mph, i.e. you either get off or fall off and, well let’s just say you seriously question your chosen pass time).

And so as Andy E’s wheel disappeared I reminded myself (with some annoyance) 'This is supposed to be a training ride.' I also noticed how much longer the rest of the ride was taking at 13mph!
Without the group and with seemingly no training purpose I felt like I was bunking off school as I idled through lanes that usually pass by in more of a grunting, snot-shotting blur... I took the early shortcut and still only just managed to get to the cafe before the TG...! This was the right course of action as all groups behind averaging any more than 13mph would have shunted me out the back!

After a long rest and refuel at the cafe (always good to catch up with Rob, Ant et al) the Box hill route back was much quicker with Tom and Dave and I taking turns all the way home. Thanks guys it was a good pace and good company!!! I found the energy to climb Box in under 7 mins and with a long rest at the top we saw the rest of the Box Hill brave getting to the top with the same sense of relief we all know too well. Then the most energetic person I know (off the bike) broke into chorus with Happy Birthday as Rima pedalled to the top – nice touch!

Rested, Tom, Ben, Dave and I pushed on. All manner of delightful recovery foods awaited.
The feast continues!

Yeah, where have you lot been  I didn't have time yesterday to have another go at waking things up as I was heading out again that afternoon.

Anyway, Rogan, welcome to my world :( After sorting out what gave me muscle weakness must be on now for two years, I'm still waiting to get back to the 19s - even the 18s are still a bit distant. Felt absolutely rubbish climbing out through Wallington and Woodcote so didn't feel I could attempt an 18. Took out the 'faster' 17s ably assisted by Brian R (or rather round the other way, I assisted Brian :D ) which began quite well with everyone working quite well together, keeping the pace nice and steady. A few people drifted off the back but everyone seemed to be keeping an eye out and we eased up as necessary and kept things together on junctions by waiting for everyone to get back in the group.

With such a nice group, I felt so much better and kept up quite well though I did have to shout at someone for forgetting the club run code of etiquette (see above) Sorry if it seems anal but having a smooth running group is a lot safer than having people jumping about all over the place and the rotations gives all a chance to ride on the front and to talk to other people in the group (TG excepted). OK rant over...

Most of the way down we numbered 13 but then one of our triathletes (sorry, I know so many by sight but names... ) caught us up and sat with us for a few miles resting. He'd already passed the other 17s and apparently we were well ahead of them :D

It felt a two-cup-of-tea job when I got to the cafe but I didn't really need all of it  Left with one of the first groups which as  junior has already observed was a bit twitchy for the return journey. I wasn't doing too badly and was hanging not too uncomfortably but unfortunately I got stuck behind two guys who couldn't corner - one was blaming his tyres and the wet roads - and once we'd lost the wheel of the group, there was no way in hell I was going to get back on. So I just kept on at the best pace I could do without killing myself eventually combining forces with another rider on a red Bianchi and Campag top for the finaly spurt over the Merstham drag and down into Coulsdon.

Didn't stop for lunch as I needed to get ready to go out again to Bromley - actually I didn't need to rush quite so much because I'd got the time wrong and turned up a bit early which was a shame because people missed the transformation from sweaty cyclist (I was riding on my tourer) to hopefully decent looking.

Oh yeah, in my cycle tourist persona, I got ignored by one of my fellow ACC'ers going through Croydon pushing past me to get to the head of the traffic (well next to the car in front of me)... I sometimes wonder if I should get a top that says "My other bike's a racing bike"

Well, first ride back after 6 weeks away and enforced total rest. Went with what promised to be and was a slow 17 group managed well by Tim. We kept together and all turned off via Partridge. Returned as a solo rider with the aim of keeping a steady pace and not being seduced into any hard efforts. This worked well and was passed by several groups finally making it to Nonna's in not too bad condition. I noticed an unusually high heart rate for perceived effort but other than that was quite comfortable. Later on I felt the ill effects of the ride with some cramping and general lassitude but overall not too bad. Nice to be back to the relative security of the club run and to receive several concerned comments over the state of my injuries. Thanks!

Nice write up Rogan, not many Hillingdon's left now I guess. I'm sure they'll be switching to saturday afternoons at some point. In my opinion it sounds like you defintley did 'bonk' - perhaps it wasn't the classic 'oh-no-I'm-going-to-faint-now' but just a mini 'bonk' (I usually get them during sportives  ). Its sound like your refuelling at the cafe did the job ggiven your efforts on Box Hill

Pah! Only cos you cheated by riding too fast and tuckering me out before we got there :x Not exactly the kind of sporting behaviour I expect from a gent like you!

I actually felt pretty good early on, good enough to put in a dig on the steps anyway. Problem is that zero training leads to low fitness, and my recovery time for efforts like that has gone through the roof. I was still getting my breath back when Matt had his bright idea of through and off once we hit the lanes! Did my best, but had to sit out quite a few turns otherwise i'd have done a Rogan and been off the back

Definitely the hardest ride i've done in a long while, so a distant 2nd at the Charlewood sprint wasn't too bad considering.
