He was still commentating on the Tour when I was in France this summer. I actually didn't realise it was him until afterwards. His voice was very rough. But he had said that his cancer wasn't progressing.

His racing days were well before I got interested in road racing, but I do remember warm summer afternoons as a kid spent watching Tour stages at the grandparents' country house, in between dips in the swimming pool.

Sean, what do you expect people to say. Yes its sad, yes he was a great cyclist that I remember watching and remember well the '89 tour but just because people don't comment doesn't mean they're not interested.

He was a great man though, often out spoken but admired for his strength and character.

[quote="Sean Hogan"]Just two comments on his death? and one of those from a Frnech man no less so that had to happen ;-)

I must say I'm a little bit disappointed.

Huh? I've never met the guy, never seen him race. Sure it's sad news for his family - who incidentally I've never met. Public outpourings of grief strike me as a bit....weird? I never got all that Lady Di guff, though I will admit that having her funeral on the same day I had to drive to Heathrow to pick up a mate coming back from hols was a masterstroke of royal family good planning. Never seen the M25 so clear

RIP Laurent
Though i never saw him race, I've just finished reading his book. if anyone else wants to read it, let me know , I'll lend it to you.
A really good read and a fantastic, honest insight into his life and bike racing in the 80's.
It is small enough to bring on CR (though not this week) or to post if you PM me your address.
It's called We were young and Carefree and is translated by William Fotherington.

I remember buying and wearing a bright green Gatorade/Chateaux d'Ax casquette with my ponytail, like ther great man in the early 90s - sadly the local youth were vocal in their disapproval

Could not agree more. Competitive blubbing for somebody they didn't even know, led by Mourner-in-Chief, Princess Tony. Like living in a parallel world that week.
