Catford and Bec Hill Climbs Sunday 10 October

Postby mrP(Boonen)VT » Mon Sep 27, 2010 1:46 pm

The Guru is back....

Anyone want to join me for a jaunt to watch the hill climbs?

I shall be leaving CSS SHARP at 9:00am - cannot wait around in the cold and need to get to Yorks Hill before the start. We will take a trip DOWN the Bec climb on the way to see just how steep it is, then head on to climb Yorks Hill ahead of the riders (tea and cake at the top).

After cheering the riders on, will go over to the Bec Hill climb and once again get tea and cake to urge on the riders up White Hill (our very own Mr  is intending to ride)

Anyone not wanting to stay out all day to include the Bec event will only be a few miles away from dropping back into Croydon.

Hi All,

News from Bec C C Hill Climb HQ, is that this year there has been a steady stream of entries arriving early & so far with 4 days left to go until the closing date ( 28th September), we are already sporting a pretty classy field already across all categories....

The event will as is tradition be held on White Lane, nr Limpsfield, Surrey on Sunday 10th October, 2.00pm. A warm dry afternoon has been arranged, unlike last year!!!

Many of the names already thrown into the hat so far are 'First timers' at the Bec event which is an encouraging trend.... Names such as last years National Road Champ Kristian House & his Rapha Condor Sharp Team mates, Graham Briggs, Jonathan Teirnan- Locke, are headline 1st timers, and Dean Downing will be returning for his 2nd attempt to be King of the Hill..... RCS Team Manager John Herety had also named Australian Darren Lapthorne & Ex African Champ Dan Craven as part of a very strong line up, but unfortunatly Lapthorne had a nasty tumble at the ToB & Craven has been chosen to go to the Commie Games....
Some of the more 'Regular' names to grace our start sheet are (at the time of writing) still conspicuous by their absence, but thats normal until the last few days that entries are open... So, in anticipation of a 'bumper crop' falling through my letterbox within the next couple of days, I hope to be able to report a full field for the 1st time in the 54 year history of this event....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As well as the RCS lads, several formidable names from the Elite British road scene have also bitten the bullet & entered, such as Team Raleighs Liam Holohan fresh from the Tour of Britain, YBlecol / Pendragons Yanto Barker who is an ever present threat to the Premier Calendar podiums & Freddy Johansson of Team Sprocket, who has had a strong season this year in Europe, and Scandinavia.... But the big question is, will any of the 'Road' boys have the power and technique to topple the more specialist 'mountain goats', who although might not be out there on the Road scene, can often be Dark Horses when it comes to Hill Climbs?!?!

An interesting, and highly competitive battle awaits!!!!!!

In the team Competition, Team Corley Cycles / Cervelo / Alpha RC have again sent a strong squad... Obviously 'miffed' after losing their title last year to the Artic Premier lads, they are keen to again be the 'Top Team' of the Hill...
It wont be an easy task as several other Clubs / Teams such as London Phoenix CC, Dulwich Paragon, Ingear Quickvit Trainsharp, Norwood Paragon, Redhill CC, Sth Western RC, Southborough & District wheelers, Sydenham Wheelers, and Team De Ver headed by the fast up & coming young star Germaine Burton, have all entered highly competitive teams

The ladies category has also so far, got more entries than usual with 7 (at the time of writing) having so far put pen to entry form which is good to see.... And 20 die hard vets fancy giving the 'young pups' a run for their money, but also be able to claim their the best of the 'old uns'!

Of course, many entrants just take part for the sheer 'pleasure' of doing so, and enjoy the atmosphere that the Bec HC is so famous for (Plus the teas & Cakes)... And as always a heartfelt welcome is sent out to all those who might not be 'in the running' , but still choose to support our event...

Places are still available, but entries will be DEFINITELY be closing on the 28th, so as to ease the pressure on my programme design team & printer, who in the past I have kept waiting till the very last minute for the copy...

Entry forms can be downloaded from the Bec CC Website www.beccyclingclub.co.uk or at the CTT Website....

More regular updates for 'The Carnival on the Climb' will be bombarding your screens over the next couple of weeks (I bet you cant wait for that eh!!!)

If anyone has any questions & queries about the event please contact me on this email address (Not via the Bec Website) or call 07802 898259

See you on the 10th

Not going full masochist this year and leaving the other 3 HCs, just do my wheezy old man impression at the Bec. Will have to pop round to Gary's with my entry tonight.

I may well drive out to one or the other events. Current thinking is to catch the last 30-mins or so of the Catford event. However, that's somewhat dependent upon success of gardening / cleaning duties the day before, what time I wake up, whether I have recovered from man-flu, etc. etc.

Does your bike remember what you look like these days Tony? Robin was asking after you at last year's Brighton HCs.

Hey - it's nice to be remembered! My bikes are a little under-used at the moment - in fact, I think the Cervelo works out at about £100 per mile ridden and that's over three-years. A small amount of rationalisation is planned very shortly on ACC forum first, but I think the Cervelo will stay.

Back to the topic...Given the weather forecast for Sunday and prevailing wind direction, conditions look to be absolutely ideal. Strong field too. I'm sure new records will be set on both hills.

Shame, class rider. You mini comeback for the HCs clearly went down well with Robin, you must have relieved him of a a few bottles of wine  .
