TdF Winn+r?

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), cycling's governing body, has provisionally suspended Tour de France winner Alberto Contador today after an anti-doping test taken at this year's race revealed traces of the banned drug clenbuterol.

"The concentration found by the laboratory was estimated at 50 picograms (or 0.000 000 000 05 grams per ml)," said the UCI in today's press release, "which is 400 times less than what the anti-doping laboratories accredited by WADA must be able to detect."

I don't think this is as clear cut as you might think...

Clenbutorol is hardly a drug someone like Contador would risk, as it stays in your body a long time, and also, its really only a stimulant. With the amount being so low, that they have found, it is entirely plausible that a contamination case could be proven.

Agree with you Adam, I know nothing about the drug but uness it is only in things you use to cheat then such a minute level could come from umpteen possibilities. 400 times less then the limit, that's got to be like being able to point out the flea that farted in a jacuzzi full of fleas.

According to Wiki it is used as a feed supplement to pigs to keep their meat lean. Around 300 people in China were poisoned with the stuff after eating contaminated pork in 2006. Now, where did I leave that sweet and sour ham sandwich?

No! We'll just be left with the Pozzato ones.

marco: Another suggestion from elsewhere on the internets - what if he infused some blood that was contaminated from earlier? That would account for the very low level and the negative results before. Allegedly.

Or we'd just have the ones of Tyler Farrar dangerously weaving in front of traffic.....

On the plus side, at least he won't be able to use the Armstrong defence.

For many of the effects mentioned by Marco he would have to be taking high levels of the drug (body builders use doses up to 120mcg per day) given the amount found and then assuming typical blood plasma volumes etc any dose taken would have been way below therapeutic levels assuming the clear test the day before indicated no doping then, but some think it was a contamination, not of meat, but of a blood transfusion on his recovery day. Anyway somehow it got there, whether accidental or not others have been banned even when proven accidental.

Also seen online that Mosquera and Garcia tested positive at the Vuelta and have unconfirmed reports about police raiding Ricco's place again.......
