Traveling to Herne Hill?

Postby Jamie AP » Wed Sep 29, 2010 10:20 pm

Lucy is off to Herne Hill for the Cyclo-Cross course on Saturday and was wondering the best way to get there? Car or train? Is there anywhere to Park locally?
Thanks

There's a car park at the track. Nearest station is North Dulwich, which is not that easy from Croydon. Or she could ride there...

I have been going there quite a few Saturday mornings and the quickest mode of transport is bike.
The car adds atleast 5 mins on the journey. Could be more if stuck in traffic along Croxted road. Has taken me 1 hour 20 before.
It is a easy route through Purley, South Croydon, south Norwood, Crystal Palace then HH.
All in around 13 miles in 50 mins for me at a steady pace.
As you live 2 roads down from me I'd add on 20 seconds.

Okay, gonna bike it - think I can find my way (oh, no appropriate smilie for that!)
Thanks Marcus that gives me an idea of how long it will take, I'll add on a few more seconds for my knobblies!

Lucy are you on your mountain bike or have you acquired a crosser :?:

I wanted to do this but feel I must get some road miles in, so hope you enjoy it and get very dirty :D

Anyone else joining Lucy for CX training on Saturday :?:

Ok, I've been a bit shy on this one!

The session started with a practice lap of the course, I'm really rubbish off road, and soon felt very intimidated by all the amazing kids on Isla bikes! We were split into ability groups and each group sent off to a different section of the course to practice "a skill". First was hill climbs, and I was very happy to get up the baby hill. But even my usual "I've given birth, I can do anything" mantra didn't get me up the big one. Next was pumping a rhythm section, unfortunately the course was really over subscribed, so there was lots of queueing and not enough pumping! Finally we learnt about dismounting, picking up the bike and remounting. Finding this very difficult I felt quite despondent, and seriously considered ducking away early before the final event - A Race :?

Well I did stay, and was really glad I did! The race was so much fun, big grin :D , loved it. I rode much faster than I would have dared on the practice lap, trying to chase other rides down. I still think I was last, and even got lost a couple of times (how I don't know  ) but I don't care cos I had fun! :D :D :D :D :D

I've been trying out a few of the skills on my rides this week. Still trying the dismount, I have the bruising to prove it . . .

Good to hear. I like the CX at Herne Hill and hope to get to some of the races there. Oh and I know how you got lost, the twisty back and forth out back with the odd pop up to track side and you can't remember whether it's left or right half the time  .

Have a good race Lucy and all ACCers competing.
I'm at the formula ford festival at Brands Hatch. Annual family outing. How inconvenient :)
