Club Run Feedback 06 Nov 2010

Postby Tim Coales » Sat Nov 06, 2010 5:36 pm

Good to see so many riders out on such a lovely November morning. Hope you all enjoyed your rides:

Early (8.45am) Brockham bonfire ride with Andrew, Training Group with Keith, 19's with Del, 18's with John & Nick, Alternative with Pete, 17's with Grahame, 16's/15's with Amy, Just For Fun with me.

Welcome to todays first-time riders Nigel, Jacob, Sarah, Jonathan (Johnny), Claire & Sophina. Hope to see you again soon.

The JFF group, consisting of myself, Johnny, Claire and Sophina took the usual route to FReigate where we stopped for refreshmants in the Country Kitchen cafe (on the left just past the TL as you exit town). We then went across Reigate Heath before turning left on Clayhill Lane back to Woodhatch, where we crossed the A217 and rejoined the club run route up past Earlswood Common where we encountered Jim T and a small group consisting of Neil S and couple of others. We covered just over 21 miles with two of the group on borrowed bikes, including a suspension MTB and a hybrid, none with toeclips or clipless pedals. We stopped for post ride refreshments at Nonna Rosas in Coulsdon where I was enthusiatically questioned about all things cycling.

FYI: I am unable to make the club run for the next 2 weeks due as its the school fayre season. I will be out on 27th Nov before doining the University run on 5th Dec

For any of you who are thinking of watching, or cycling, the LBVCR (London to Brighton Veteran Car Run) tomorrow, Nonna Rosa's cafe in Coulsdon Town centre will be open.

As Tim mentioned, I took out a 15/16 with some of the stronger looking beginners. It was quite a big group with a few ACC regulars joining in but after Reigate we split into 2 groups with Mr Baker taking the slightly slower ones on a more direct route to Charlwood while I went on the usual route (though we did take the Partridge Lane route just to cut off a bit). Turned into quite a sociable ride - obviously not going fast enough

I'd agreed to meet a friend in Ewell for lunch so didn't come back with the rest of the club run. I did think of joining the Box Hill group but took one look at who was in it and decided that I'd be better on my own taking the direct route to Brockham and then along the main road to Pixham Lane and up to Leatherhead and Epsom. I think the Box Hill group had gone through a bit before because I could see some damp tyre marks through Pixham. Managed not to break any spokes this time and got to Ewell only 10 minutes later than I'd reckoned on.

Don't think I'll be doing the chaingang this week as the lactic acid was really burning my legs at any attempt to push things a bit more and I'm finding the gearing on my borrowed back wheel a bit hard going. Also don't want to break it - hopefully will get my own rear wheel back next Saturday.

Hi Rachel, I guess you could say it was an alternative J4F route :!:

Depending on the experience and ability of first-time riders and how long it takes to get to Reigate Heath, I've decided not to go all the way to Charlwood and then find it is too much for some people to make it back. This was the case on Saturday, Claire, Nigel and Jacob were capable of doing the full route with the 15/16 group, but the others hadn't riden much at all, so 40 miles was probably not going to be"fun" by the end  However, by cutting across, they experienced all the hills on the outward and return legs, so next time are more likely to cope with the extra flat miles down to the cafe and back :)

Fliexibility is the name of the game!

Thanks Tim for taking charge in what was a relatively VC-free zone yesterday. My excuse for not trying to take charge is that I'm often last to the VC huddle (too busy saying hello to people, passing on regards from Michelle) and usually first out with the TG.

More C than VC?

I observed the Training Group from the back  - well it is November and time to ease off the gas a little :D. This week's game for me was to ride entirely in middle-ring (winter bike has a triple). My cadence seems to have dropped recently, so a bit of spinning was in order. Managed it nearly all the way, but rose to the bait at the Charlwood sign

Good fun as always and as you say a glorious day - I particularly enjoyed the VC huddle - almost magical - we started huddling and then we appeared to be multiplying - VCs suddenly everywhere - spooky!

I rode with the 18s - mostly the usual motley crew - Sam, Jeff, Noel, Galum, Iliya, Tom, and Robbie. We kept it steady and kept it together until the climb up to Rusper where Galum and Iliya put the hammer down and had most of us busting our lungs to keep with them. A photo finish couldn't separate Jeff and Sam at the sprint. Got to the cafe averaging 18.5 mph. :D

Rode home with Brian, Noel, Lindsay, Mark L et al - with Sam, Brian and me doing most of the work - got to the right turn onto the golf course road to see that we'd been towing a veritable peloton of the fast boys  who, nicely rested, then proceeded to rip it up on the climb!! Sam disappeared with the boy racers up the climb and left Brian and me to fight out our usual 'best of the rest, old boy, duel of the also rans' KoM prize.  Averaged nearly 19 mph door to door.

FYI - I hope to be there every Sat this Month - I love it (and otherwise have a sad and empty life!!)

It was good (as always) riding with your group Jon!

Unfortunately I won't make CR for the next two weeks but looking forward to my next ride. I ordered all spare parts Mr Boardman needs so hopefully no punctures or defects next time (touch wood).
