Sticky Posts (was Fixed Posts)

OK its a minor thing, but do we have to have so many fixed posts or could they be moved into the relevant subsections?

I've done some, mostly when people have asked me to by PM. I haven't added notes to the moderators area recently -- sorry -- although you can see who's done what in the moderator control panel of course. It's probably more agreeable to make notes in the actual thread so they're public -- what do you think?

One issue we've had increasingly is that stuff doesn't seem to get bounced up and multiple threads are being created instead. This is partly I think because (a) people are putting everything in General, even if it's in other threads as well (b) people aren't always putting dates on post titles. This is why I moved a few threads and edited titles the other day, and I tend to think we need to prune duplicates more.

I think perhaps there should be a few more guidelines written down - Marco any thoughts on what should and shouldn't be a sticky/announcement? Also strickies can be made so for a period of time - maybe if a thread is made sticky for good reason, a week shoud be default?

I [size=200]HATE[/size] fixed, or sticky posts. I'd far rather see things float to the top either because of sufficient interest or someone bouncing things as a reminder. For example, I have no idea why the darts one has become fixed (though doubtless it's well meaning and thanks jeez I don't wanna cause offence or anything ). I'd prefer to push it to the top on occasions when there's news or when we need a hand with the team. If it stays @ the top no one will read it.

Good to get feedback! Will do some destickying. I do think changes like this should in general be noted in the thread itself though, rather than in mods forum?

Bah! I only read this 'cos I thought it was about fixed wheels and I was thinking of getting mine out of the shed for the winter

Seriously though, I've tried to make the format of the weekly Saturday club run post a standard "Club Run Sat DD/MM/YY" to make it easy to find and searchable. I've alsio encouraged feedback on the same thread after the ride to cut down on excessive posts. (hopefully)

I think we need to look at this again.

I don't know if the other mods/admins feel the same but I don't really want to spend any more time responding to requests to make a post sticky, only to get feedback about too many sticky posts; and vice versa, destickying old posts that aren't news any more, only to deal with feedback that the posts will never be found again. You might be surprised just how much strong feeling and correspondence this creates.

Sometimes we are wrong; we can't keep everyone happy at the same time.

Marco's guidelines above seem fine to me, but I'd like to add that posts in general should only be sticky for one week with a max of one month on request. Destickying will then be by schedule. If it isn't news, it shouldn't be sticky.

As Marco says, interested parties are welcome to bounce an old thread (preferably by adding new information).

And yes, I'm going to make this a sticky post - for a week for comments - I'd like to try and deal with them here in public rather than individual PMs.
