London League CX Stanmer Park Brighton

Postby Sylv » Mon Nov 15, 2010 11:11 am

George and me rode for ACC yesterday on what started a dull grey day but then turned into a very wet day as we were driving South. We got there with bags of time but it was raining so hard we sat in the van with the heating on rather than go reccie the course. We knew this was going to be good fun, but just couldn't find the motivation to go out. Eventually the rain stopped and with 15min to go we headed out for a practice lap that had to be shortened due to the sheep in the field - great course still.

I was half expecting to be gridded at the start so didn't really place myself towards the front, but having not yet completed a London League round I wasn't, and so another race starting with some 40+ people in front of me (George got himself a little further up). Lots of bottlenecks, people to pass and crashes to avoid on that first lap, George getting a better start than me. It took some effort but I was back onto his wheel by the end of lap 1 and we we could see the lead group of BJ Whenman, Gareth Montgomerie and Matt Holmes in the distance, followed by a Russell Short and a few more riders.

I passed George and those few riders, to find myself now in 4th. Due to the amount of rain the course was super sloppy but still entirely rideable and good fun, apart from one short steep climb. As it often turns out though, during the race it dried out and some parts became much stickier - not so much fun. I was slowly making progress on the lead group, which still had about almost 1min on me. Matt Holmes then started falling off the three, and after another couple laps I had him in sight and wondering what the best tactic would be once I came up to him. He seemed to be getting quite tired so I thought I'd just ride past him and hope he wouldn't be able to follow. As I got on his wheel though he put a good dig on a flat grassy part which sent me in the red. Still we were coming up to a climbing section so I went to the front. After a few hairpins around trees, we came to an off camber climb, that I'd managed to ride till then (struggled a bit the previous time) whilst I'd noticed Matt had been getting off the bike.

I tried to ride it but it was so cloggy I just came to a halt half way up, not quite ready for a dismount so lost some time. Next up after a tricky off camber section was the steeper climb, and by the time I'd realised pushing the bike was not a good idea there anymore with the amount of mud clogging up between wheels and frame/brakes, it was too late as the bike was far too heavy to shoulder. Which is just what Matt had been doing, and now getting away as I was struggling just to get moving. Only a few more minutes to go then so I gave it all, but it wasn't enough and so finished 4th, not sure what the time gap to Montgomerie the winner was but I reckon under 2", and maybe 20s behind Matt.

I think George will have some pics of our bikes after the carnage (he had trouble with mud clogging and fell back to 25th), and Stuart "Spees" as John called him was there filming too. Next time I should be getting a gridded start, so would like to think I'll be able to keep up with the lead group (moreso if it's muddy : )

Fantastic course but very very wet and mussy conditions like Sylv mentioned as soon as it stopped raining the mud really started sticking as you can see from my bike.

I had a good start and managed to make up loads of places into the first corner although I did have a few people swearing at me, I can't think why though

I think I startled Phil Glowinski as I passed him earlier with a big YeeeHaaar, he was not amused

Then my bike started to grind slowly to a halt and with all the muyd clogging everything up I was having to push out over 400w just to keep going :?

I was struggling just to keep the wheels turning and on the last couple of laps had to frequently stop to clear out all the muck to keep riding.

Big up to Sylv who had a fantastic race and a really well earned top result, I think cross is just right for ya Sylvain, well done!

Sylvs spotless bike

I wish I had disc brakes instead of mud/ilevers

Great result Sylv, what will you do when you start at the front :?:

George you must have made it easier for everyone else by clearing the track of mud with you mud collecting machine :)

Ed, for a man with a Ritchey Swisscross I am surprised you don't know this is a reality for serious racers

Not the best example and not much point in the dry, but you get the point!

Oh and don't try and remount like him

Thanks to George for letting me use his bike-wash facilities!

Let's do it all over again next time ..

Oh of course. Jody Crawforth had a couple of bikes when he was duelling it with Ian Field a couple of years ago at dunsfold. Can't remember if he switched.

The Ritchey is up and running and I've been commuting on it for the last 3 weeks. A bit more tweaking and it'll be ready to race. :D :D

Yeah bit pointless in dry conditions.
Just seen the picture of the showers from last w/e. They look pretty bad.

Cheers
