Fitting Shimano Dura Ace 7900 cranks to a BB30 frame.

Any opinions or experience (positive or negative) on the following?

  • BB30 Adapters
    e.g.

      Shimano
      Ultimate

  • Ceramic Bearing Bottom Brackets
I'm only considering the lower end of the ceramic BB market, e.g.

      Hope
      Wheels Manufacturing

Or just stick to standard Dura Ace 7900?

Get Hope. I was talking to my mtb shop guy about them vs Chris King and he said they're just as good. Plus having serviceable bearings rather than the sealed throwaway Shimano crap makes them a better long-term bet.

Thanks for the opinion Dombo.

Continuing to look at this..... turns out that the Hope BB only has ceramic bearings on the drive side. :?

Not convinced - at 3x the price, that's a heck of a lot of regular Shimano BBs to get through to make it worthwhile.

I have had Hope ceramic, Shimano XTR (Dura ace equivalent), Token Ceramic and FSA top of the range Ceramic (£175). All of which fitted to the mtb over the last 3 years. I can say with certainty that the Shimano performs the best for what it cost and there is no real weight difference either. The Token seemed like good value but was stiff to turn at some points, this is common I am told. The Hope was was but got stuck in a frame so I never got a chance to see how it held up as i sold the frame. Still using the FSA one it seems good but not worth the money :( . Dura ace or Ultegra all the way :D value and performance.

Nope, it's just two to get through, by the third you should have bought a Hope
I'm on my third, fitted last summer to fit my still newish chainset - the next one will be a Hope but I'll have to change the crankset too, which should need replacing by then.

I picked up an Aerozine ceramic bearing bb for my mtb from Superstar Components for around £50, which was the best price I could find for a ceramic bearing model at the time (ones with ceramic cups are way more expensive).

Haven't done mega miles on it so can't vouch for its durability, but it's very smooth.

Now I've actually seen the BB30 frame set-up :D , I'm not going for the Shimano or Ultimate adaptors. (They fit into existing BB30 bearings, so I can't get my head around how you'd ever tighten a standard BB?)

Instead I'm going to try a KCNC BB30 Bottom Bracket Adapter - reckon I can fit that no probs.

If that doesn't work, than I can get a shop to fit a FSA BB-30 Adapter (needs specialist tools). Then I can simply fit any standard BB.

Blimey this sounds like a faff. I'll stick with a normal English threaded BB shell and square taper cranks. Still works perfectly and runs smooth as a very smooth thing.

New to me anyway. :D

I'm sure if I paid someone, there would be no faff  . I prefer to be able to do things myself though - I've no previous experience of BB30.
Mr  , the bike will also have those new-fangled pneumatic tyres.

Anyway, I've got 'til March, when the country thaws out, to build the bike.
