Penshurst Cross ACC promotion 28 Nov 10

I'll stick this here to make Toks' job easier next year ; )

First up thanks again to George and Mark who put up a brilliant course on Saturday despite the last minute dropout of two helpers. And those who braved the cold on Sunday to help out. I don't know, my Garmin shows min 0.0c but that looks like it doesn't recognise negative temps?

Was gridded #1 at the start, thanks to many people being at the nat trophy (and some others staying at home presumably. Start up the hardpack fireroad and I took 3rd wheel into the singletrack, with fast man Gary Record opting for his mtb on a course where it's a known as a viable option, and Matt Zeitz who'd had to pump up a seemingly deflated new tub on the start line. I was trying out my newly fitted mini v-brakes and soon found out they were brilliant - much more stopping power, helpful on the fast descents and tight hairpins, where I could outbreak most people. On the practice lap I found the course to be pretty greasy in places, but with no sticking mud. Despite the low temps the ground was not frozen solid though, with only frost on some of the grass. A few sections were quite bumpy though despite the only 2 bars in my clinchers, which got me wondering what it would be like with tubs at 1.5 bars. Might have to try that next ..

End of lap 1 had them two in sight, a few seconds back. On lap 2 I passed Zeitz due to his tire problems. Was loosing time on Record but still had hopes of catching up later on. But after 20 min I started to struggle, probably not helped by doing nothing at all for four whole days, trying to shake off the cold. George caught up and thanks to a small tumble of mine in the frosty grass (which still sliced a chunk of skin off my palm, through two layers of gloves), he came past. Next was the long fast downhill on which he was pretty handy. I thought that'd be the last I'd see of him so wanted to spur him on to catch first place, but he was already too far ahead.

I managed to claw my way back on the climbs next though, and end of lap 3 was in his wheel. We spent the next lap together, me urging him to speed up as I could see a group getting closer behind. At that point I really thought we were going to get caught and passed, and that I'd be seen out of the top ten. Managed to distance George on a shallow greasy climb, where I seemed to be doing better than most. Next up I was caught be Russell Short, but he was ahead of the previous group, so just two of us, which was good. I struggled to keep his wheel up the fireroad, almost giving up, then passed him just before the start of the first technical section, hoping to get a gap there. Did that but after the climbing he was back and passed me at the same place as previous time. This time I let him lead into the hairpins, hoping he'd do a mistake.

After a bad patch mid-race I was starting to feel better, unbelieveably. Was checking my lap times and apart from the first fast one, they kept consistent. I then managed to distance Short who was now slowing down. One guy was giving time gaps and after growing from 30s I was now over 1 min down from Record, so no hope of catching up barring mechanical. Final lap I was on my own so I concentrated on getting all my lines right. Was happy enough with the result, and an interesting race with all the position swapping and so. Was an on-the-day decision, but glad I went in the end. I think I need to start training though, as the next round which I can do, not until three weeks, should have all the big hitters, and might be a bit of a shock to the system .. not to mention the nat champs in Jan if I can be bothered to travel to Derby.

Oh and Jamie, yes at least one person brough their jump bike for a post race session - respect
