2 hour commute home to ride 14 miles  .

Roads okay if taking it careful and slow until Dulwich. Let some air out the tyres to drop them to squashy snow pressure and climbed up to Crystal Palace through slush and over powdery snow watching out for the black ice. Exhaust gas hitting cold tarmac = strips of black ice all down the road.

Once up at Palace parade a different story, chock a block traffic meant black ice all over the road in ridges so skipped up on tho the pavement to ride on the compacted snow. Descent of Anerley Hill was a no go on the road due to traffic, black ice, slidding cars, stuck and abandoned cars / buses, so a roll down on the brake to avoid any pavement slip outs. I had to do this all the way down to Elmers End as the roads were a no go if you wanted to go forwards and not sideways / down.

Carried on the pavement with the odd slither to the turn off for the Glades cut through to Shirley. This was alright as with less traffic the roads were powdery snow again so ridable. The road through from the lights to Spout Hill was a sheet of ice with cars still stupidly trying to go forwards but going sideways and backwards  . I had to walk this road as the snow on the pavement was too thick to ride through. The road along to Spout Hill was a very picturesque ride along the pavement through the trees, and climbing over two fallen ones.

Spout Hill, yes people were trying to drive down it  . I opted for a brake riding roll down the pavement which was fine and then along by Addington Park. Traffic nose to tail, roads sheets of ice and no-one going anywhere...except me :D . The final short ride through the snow to home.

14 miles, 2 hours, 7mph average speed :D .

Been out tonight on my mtb around lloyds and shirley hills super good fun but the hardest riding is on the roads, I'm looking forward to my commute at 4.30am tomorrow morning on the MTB, I bet I'll be the only one actually getting to that conference then :D
At least if I turn up I'll get paid

George i missed you did you get my voicemail?

After a 1h10 commute home (usually under 40 min, utter chaos from Streatham) despite being tired I decided it was too good a chance to miss. And seeing as the cross bike was already full of snow after having cross Lloyds Park, went out for another 1h10. Too much snow in Shirley Hills to be honest, lost 15min crossing it having to push as soon as the slightest incline. Then went on local small roads, nothing like it to teach you cyclocross finesse! Compact tire tracks but then they collapse under you :? bit like riding in sand - lots of body English required. Cleared Winchesley Rise quite easily but the hill that ends up near the roundabout going to Waitrose was just too slushy. Finished going down Farley road - utter chaos! Cars stopped everywhere some abandonned, broken down.

George was it your tire track on Conduit Lane? Followed it, looked like the rider had managed not to dab a foot the whole way, I didn't but it was hard work!!!

Yep that was my trail up Conduit lane Sylv, I got your message after I got back in. It was utter carnage on the roads. It's hard to keep riding uphill in all that snow but good fun, lets go out tomorrow night then!

Managed to get to East Croydon via train and tram to find there were no buses or trains going anywhere. So I set off down the A23 passing a long line of traffic which was not moving anywhere, to near Coulsdon then up the hill to Caterham.

Super fun, with lots of friendly banter and only one snowball (a good shot it was). I was definitely the fastest moving thing and got my training in for the day.

One wheel drive is the future of snow travel!! :D :D

I thought I was doing badly covering 19 miles in 2.5 hours. Though to be fair 6 miles of that from Walworth to Hackbridge was ridden at a decent speed with little traffic or snow. It just seemed to be one solid line of traffic from Hackbridge to Merstham. I agree it was much easier to ride on the pavement though with 23c tyres at 100psi it was interesting at times. Only managed to fall off once  Serves me right for being too lazy (and not believing the weatherman) to get my mountain bike out of the shed.

Sylv, is that a 2nd cassette on the front? Swap front & rear for a different gearing range? :?:

I think it's more if the rear freezes solid

Also I think the titanium forks store stove fuel

My Schwalbe Marathon Winter spiked tyres arrived yesterday, I'll be fitting them tonight :D .

Last night was nightmare - after 6 hour delay at Dublin, finally arrived at Gatwick in time to get 8pm train to East Croydon. Nothing to Coulsdon or Purley, queue for cabs stretched across the station frontage, no buses. No rooms at Croydon Park Hotel or anywhere else so I walked home, dragging my wheeled cabin bag. Apart from anyone on a bike I was the fastest thing moving. Took 2.5 hours to walk 8 miles, fuelled by three Mars bars, one at GBs, one at Purley Tesco, last one at CSS.

At 3 for a quid that was the best pound I spent all day.

Top Tip - a pair of ordinary socks worn over black brogues provide all the grip you need on icy roads.

Hey guys you wouldn't believe it but I just tried it with the socks over my tyres and it actually works.
Loads of grip on the ice and no slippage.
My sock didn't quite stretch around so I'll ask Marek to borrow a pair of his.
