Addiscome CC bike box

Postby PeteS » Sun Mar 14, 2010 8:20 pm

The Club has bought a Polaris bike box for fully paid-up members to hire at £10 per week or part of a week. The plan is to buy a second box once we've seen if this one withstands the usage and if there's a demand. Please PM me if you'd like to book it.

Does anyone else want to look after the bikebox? Now that the rather strange decision by Elliot to de-sticky the thread has been taken, I'm guessing that the flow of requests will dry up and, frankly, I'm not happy to have the thing blocking my back passage -so to speak- for nothing!

OK, I've reinstated this as a sticky post; not stickying or destickying anything else until we have a firm policy.

Hi

I'm new to the use of bike boxes, :? so I would appreciate a bit of general advice on the use of a BB.

Looking at the web I understand that airlines like Ryanair require bikes to be packed in a bike box.
I'm going touring in Poland with some friends from my old workplace, and I will be taking a Dawes Galaxy (14kg roughly), is the BB suitable for this type of bike? what weight is the box?
The max weight for a bike with box seems to be 30kg, so can I sneak some clothes/kit into the bike box if weight permits?
Dates are not fully confirmed yet but are likely to be from September 11th to 20th, is the ACC BB available then?

I'd be grateful for any general tips on packing a bike etc.

We are on our 2nd box, the first having succumbed to some baggage handlers' rough treatment. Overall, they have been very successful in sending bikes across the world and, as far as I know, there has been no damage to any machine.
When packing a bike, you'll need to remove the wheels, take out the saddle, seat-post, pedals rear mech and handlebars, wrap them in padding and wedge them within the box. I put plumbers' lagging on the tubes and make sure nothing can move inside the box. If there's enough spare weight, then clothes can be used to pad out the bits. If you're taking a touring bike, you'll need to remove the mudguards.
Sadly, I'm afraid that the Club's box is booked for when you want it but I believe there are some for hire at Geoffrey Butler's.

Hi,

I am a new member and have just seen that there is this box for hire - is it free from 6-10th June by any chance?

Many thanks,
Alex
