Carbon seatpost fitting

Postby Andrew G » Mon Jan 10, 2011 4:35 pm

Hello folks, hoping to find some wisdom.

Carbon seatposts:
- Do you grease? I've always understood yes with copper slip but have read that some say no.
- seatpost collar slot on same side or opposite side to slot in seat tube? I've always had same side but seen stuff saying opposite to spread load.
- What torque setting do you use, particularly if you have an Easton post? What I've seen says 6-8nm but that seems high to me. 5 feels pretty much FT.

Sounds a bit like bull to me.

Whats this...you going carbon on us?

Seat post clamp same side as slot on my steed, never had a slippage.

Torque. I did mine up to 5nm but I'm carbon on carbon.

As for grease etc I use carbon composite shield made by Pace. Cant see it not working the same on any type of frame material. I have a pot of the stuff so your welcome to borrow it and spread it all over and see how you get on :D

Cheers Ant.

Carbon post in a titanium frame, wanted a titanium post as well but couldn't find one that fitted my requirements at a sensible price. A couple of Campag Record Ti posts were on ebay but were going for silly money for their age, the only other one I found was a pmp one but that was c£130! Too much for now. Others had no offset or a stupid clamping system.

Eventually found some info on the Easton website and they recommend a dry fit so have done that, galvanic fusion normally only occurs with 2 different metals so should be okay. I've used carbon component paste once before, a carbon post in an alu frame and it stuck so tight it needed two big bloke having a tug of war competition with the frame to get it out!

Tightened to 5nm same as you. That's tighter than I've done posts up before on feel so even though lower than Easton say should still be okay.

Kept the seatpost collar and slot same size, as I have done previously. to be honest reading a bit after a bit of googling I think a lot of these things are either dated or old wives tales. Never used to have these "issues", I've never bothered with them before, and I can't imagine there's that many retrograde steps made.
