12 Hour Team Time Trial

Postby richv » Wed Feb 01, 2006 2:56 pm

It looks like someone has finally taken a leaf out of the mountain bikers' book and decided that a 12-hour time-trial is much easier if you don't actually have to ride the whole thing :D

On 30th July there is what is titled a 12-hour 'tag' time trial. Open to teams of 2, 3 or 4 riders you share the riding between you changing at a fixed point on the route (approximately every 25 miles). Aim as for a normal 12-hour of riding as far as you can in your team's 12-hour time

It's based on a circuit just south of York and looks like it will be run alongside a solo 12-hr event so you can compare the team's distance to the poor sods who have done it all on their own (the solo event was won last year by Kevin Dawson with 291 miles  ). Not sure yet whether I want to do it (still trying to come to terms with such a strange idea!) but wondering whether anyone else would be interested?

I might be Richard, but its far too early to say!. By the way, is the ACC summer evening tens course seen as a fast, average or slow course. There's this really annoying guy I know whose determine to kick my arse in a 10 TT and we're just trying to compare times. Thanks

I'm no expert, but I've always found the Holmwood course very slow. I was nearly 2 minutes faster on G10/57 when I tried it last year - which probably brings you sub-22 minutes. 8)

Rich, that sounds like an interesting event, although probably humbling to ride as a team of four and still get beaten by KD. Looks like it doesn't clash with anything important down here either, so I'll give it a go.

Toks, the Holmwood course isn't the fastest around, but certainly not the slowest either. What you need to do is have a head-to-head with your man on a sporting (a.k.a. hilly) course so you can give him a good kicking. I suggest the SCCU 10 on 25th March.

Mike, based on my own times, G10/42 is 2 seconds slower than G10/57, not 2 minutes.

The G10/42 is, in my view a pretty consistent but not the fastest course, whereas some of the fast courses can be pretty inconsistent.

On good days I would rate the G10/57 about 10-15 seconds quicker (Jon should put a bigger chainring on so he doesn't have to freewheel down the hill  ).

The E2/10 is allegedly one of the fastest courses in the country and I would guess about 60 seconds quicker on a good day. But the E2/10 is reliant on a heavy traffic stream and not too much wind as it is pretty exposed.

For example in the space of about 6 weeks at the end of last season I rode the G10/42 twice and the E2/10 twice. I think I did 22.38 and 22.22 on the G10/42 and 22.02 and 22.13 on the E2/10 in similar conditions. The wind and lack of traffic on the E2/10 made it a lot slower than it could be otherwise - Steve Kemsley had done a 21.58 on it earlier in the year and did about a 22.30 when I did my 22.13.

thanks guys - what you've all said pretty much concurs with what I've been told - its not fast, but then again its not exactly slow either. I only did 3 TT's last year so I'll try and get into double figures this year. I'm not much of a sprinter so it'll will be good practice for breakaways.

As a new-ish ACC member who wants to have a crack at a few TTs - I'll obviously be starting with 10s - when do the ACC evening 10s run. I expect I'm jumping the gun a bit as I'll be going to Jon's TT talk on the 15th.
Cheers,
Andrew.

Back on subject- It looks like someone has finally taken a leaf out of the mountain bikers' book and decided that a 12-hour time-trial is much easier if you don't actually have to ride the whole thing
rich you know you can also ride solo in mtb, a 12 or 24 race!

there's even a new club that's been created http://www.uk24solo.com

But most mountain bikers have the good sense not to do something so daft  The thought of spending 12 hours on a bike fills me with dread and that's still six months away.

How about a mountain bikers vs testers competition over this 12-hour :?: We could ban Jon from using his new bike to level the playing field.

Rich, Jon, yes I could be interested in this. Probably solo - I want to do something that scares me - but could do in a team if that's what it comes to. Are you still thinking about this one?

Are there any other 12h dates (closer to home)?

Sylv if you want to do a solo 12hr come along to the ECCA 12hr on 20th August. Rob, Jon and I are supposed to be riding it solo and when I last heard Tamar was going to do it as well.

The course is based around the A11 just south of Cambridge, it is well organised, and there is a wide range of abilities (last year the distances ranged from 272 miles down to 163 miles), many people ride normal road bikes rather than tt bikes, and there is also a trophy for the person riding their first 12-hour who does the greatest distance.

For a road 12 hour it's important to have some support as the course does not repeat the same loop all the time so there is no one area that you regularly pass and can pick up stuff. With several of us up there we should be able to persuade enough friends/relatives to turn up to provide support for everyone.

Entries have to be in 2 weeks before on a CTT entry form. If you need details let me know and I'll pm them.

Thanks Rich but the 20th August weekend is already taken - by a 24h!

What's the 12h record again in the club - around 245 miles no?

262.5 miles.

I'm not sure if we're going to do the 'Tag' event, nothing is organised yet. Other 12 hours you can consider:

6/8/06 National Champs (Norfolk somewhere I think) - closing date for entries is 11/7/06. Never a full field so you will get a place.

13/8/06 Kent 12 hr

3/9/06 Icknield 12 Hr (based around A1 south of Bedford I think)

3/9/06 Welsh CA 12 Hr (possibly the largest 12hr, reputation for being well run and friendly. If you're unsupported then it could be a good one as they provide feed and drinks stations around the course, although you might get a bit sick of rice pudding filled ice cream cones!)

If you want entry details for any of those let me know.

Ok, thanks. I got my dates wrong - the 24h (in a team) is actually the weekend before that, but the 20/08 is the Singlespeed Worlds in Stockholm, which I am hoping to do but not fully decided yet.

But the other dates in August and September sound good, the one in Norfolk maybe (I have family there, but I doubt I'll convince them to support me for 12 hour!). Please send me details if you have anymore, thanks.
