I spoke to Simon last night and he asked me to post a few details of his accident.

Seems like he was riding down the hill from Caterham to Purley when a car coming up the hill turned right in front of him accross his line. Simon hit the wing, was thrown over the bike and hit the windscreen, breaking it in two places. He was then thrown a considerable distance in the air before landing, conscious but unable to move, in the road.

Fortunately a cyclist riding further behind Simon witnessed the incident and was able to help at the scene as was the driver of the car who stopped immediately and was very cooperative. Digital pics were taken of the damage and accident scene and as Simon has Gold Level insurance cover with the BCF, there is no problem with the legal side of things.

Simon himself remained in hospital from the time of the accident (Tuesday) until Thursday evening and though it wasn't thought nescessary to put him in a body brace, he does have to use crutches to move around and has restricted movement. He's been signed off for at least six weeks but as with all spinal injuries, it's difficult at this stage to assess just how long complete recovery will take.

There's not a lot else he can do now excpet wait and try to not to get too frustrated, as you know Simon is a very strong rider and was up to six days a week training in anticipation of a good season in 2006. The fact that he was so fit will I'm sure contribute to a shorter period of recovery.

In the meantime it would greatly improve his mood if any members living or riding in the Caterham area could pay him a visit, however briefly, to cheer him up. All our best wishes are with him.

Have we any more info on how Simon is getting on?.

I spoke to Simon yesterday. He sounded pretty down, he is off work for 4-6 weeks or so. He has got a cold at the moment to top it all which is not good.

Good news is that he is likely to make a full recovery, and because of the Gold Insurance with BCF he should be able to get sports physio which will bring him back better.
