Campag to Shimano

Postby Lucyap » Fri Feb 25, 2011 9:09 pm

Hi

Advice please : How would I change from a 9 speed Campag set up to 10 speed Shimano? What do I need to change?

- rear derailleur, rear shifter, cassette

 or do I also need to change:

- front derailleur and bottom bracket :?:

I'm getting conflicting information on this, and want to make sure it will work before I take the plunge and order bits!

Lucy.

Change the lot if I was you. Campag and shimano don't live together in perfect harmony.

The indexing is different so you need to change ergos/sti, rear derailleur and cassette. Front derailleur is basically just a plate that moves the chain and isn't indexed, it's just a friction shifter although campag left shifter is also indexed to allow more precise trimming (or in Alex's case to run the rear derailleur through the left lever) so you can keep that - although that's the cheapest bit to replace. If it's a TT bike then you could keep the left shifter if you could find a single right shifter but they're only sold in pairs new so it would be an ebay job, if it's a road setup then you wouldn't want different shaped hoods either for comfort or looks. I think that you can run the chainsets happily as there's no indexing needed and width wise they're fine, certainly know plenty of testers who've run them quite happily.

You can run mix and match with a clever adjusting widget that adjusts the indexing but I wouldn't go that route unless you really have to, some tourists do so they can run shimano wider ranged MTB gearing at the back but use Campag levers to keep the front clear of cables (pre new look) so they could fit a bar bag. There's a link to in the Useful Info sticky/announcement. Marchismo cassettes are bespoke and allow you to run campag rear mech and cassette with shimano shifters and vice versa but are quite expensive.

I had a bike with campag at the front and shimano at the rear and it worked fine. As Andrew said, there is not much to the front especialy a TT Bike.

Never mind 'how?', I want to know 'why?' :? .

I'm not looking to start a fight or anything, I'm just curious.

Jut as a guess, if someone's husband had got them some shiny wheels that took Shimano and they wanted to use them on the road bike and the TT bike (which was set up with Campag) without changing everything, that might be a reason.

Cant you just change the hub the cassette sits on rather than changing the whole groupset?

You can in some cases, but the bearings are in the freehub so this can be fiddly (well, it was on my MTB). Not something you'd want to do on a regular basis.

Of course, what you really want is a version of Di2 electronic shifting that you can flick a switch to go between 8/9/10/11 speed campag/shimano. And free cake.

Someone's got a spouse who buys them shiny new wheels? Why didn't I think of that? I have to get my own.

Question from my mechanic - Will a Shimano bar end shifter work with a Campag front mech :?:

Yes, the front shifter is only a friction shifter to lever the mech over, like an old down tube shifter. It just pulls the cable as much a you move the lever no clicky indexing up front.
