Update on Addiscombe Challenge Sportive

I am trying to keep the momentum going on this so the more others can contribute the better. We are up to 95 entries. If you are a member of the club and plan to enter could you please do it now both to safeguard your place and make it seem successful and desirable to enter - thanks

1. I have produced a press release (below)which you are welcome to copy circulate but please let me know where so it isn't duplicated too much. So far I have sent it to cyclosport but will be posting out to others today.

2. we have agreed a venue for a feed station, Southwater Village Hall, http://www.southwater-pc.gov.uk/Village-Hall.aspx

3. I and others have delivered some more flyers to shops and events - more help needed with this

4. I have arranged for Stuart at http://www.neutralservice.cc/ to help by offering bike technical support at the start and feed station

5. We posted 750 flyers in goody bags at recent Spring Onion event

6. Connor is in the process of preparing the signs

There is more to do but it seems to be progressing well, thanks for all your support, Alan

PRESS RELEASE

Addiscombe Cycling Club, Croydon
28 March 2011
For immediate release

CROYDON'S SUPER SUCCESSFUL CYCLING CLUB LAUNCHES ITS FIRST CYCLO-SPORTIVE

THE ADDISCOMBE CHALLENGE WILL TEST YOUR FORM - BUT NOT TO DESTRUCTION

Just as road cycling fully emerges from the winter doldrums the super successful cycling club from Croydon South London has anticipated the first blush of Summer by launching its first ever cyclo-sportive.

Addiscombe Cycling Club, established 1929, will host this event leaving the edge of Croydon to venture into the hills and lanes of Surrey and West Sussex on the morning of Sunday, 5 June, 2011.

Covering 135km (85 miles) of of quiet roads and stunning natural beauty, 400 participants will benefit from the starting point's convenient location with strong transport links and a first class headquarters facilities. The event will doubtless attract many of the club's 400+ members but it is open to all on a first come, first served basis. There is an easy online entry process at http://www.addiscombe.org/addiscombe-sportive/ With a super economical price of £15 this event represents real value for money.

The route will take in some iconic locations and hills including Chipstead Valley—Headley—Ranmore Common—White Down—Sutton Abinger—Peaslake—Ellen’s Green—Five Oaks—Bucks Green—Southwater—Colgate—Rusper—Newdigate—Coldharbour—Leith Hill—Abinger Common—Whitedown—Box Hill and returning to Chipstead Valley. Whilst it is a tough ride with an elevation gain of around 5000 feet, this is just the course to test your form and set you up for some of the more challenging European events like the Etape.

Addiscombe CC has never been an inward looking club and this event has a global component aimed at uniting cyclists from across the world. Cajamarca, Peru is a remote city in the Northern cordillera of the Andes. Half of any money raised will be dedicated to supporting an enthusiastic group of competitive and leisure cyclists. These young cyclists have very few resources and most adapt mountain bikes for road use; equipment and facilities are very basic. It is hoped that through this venture the club can offer support for a start-up business loan for sustainable cyclo-tourism and small bursaries for clothes, essential repairs and travel to competitions.

Alan Malarkey, organiser of the event, commented: “establishing this event in our annual calendar will present a great opportunity for local cyclists to engage in a classic event of its type. We are also offering an arm of friendship further afield by helping inspire a new generations of riders in a fascinating part of the developing world”

Joyce Smith, Chair person of the club said: “This is fantastic news for cyclists around South London and beyond and congratulations to the team behind this successful venture

By support for a loan do you mean ACC making some sort of guarantee to the lender or would ACC be making the loan directly?

Or perhaps arrange for ACC to take a small equity stake in any such venture? IMHO this could strengthen the bond with our club better than a loan or loan guarantee.

Just make sure we have limited liability - i wouldn't want to be jointly responsible if some muppet punter takes a flyer off a gravelly Andean hairpin

I would most likely lodge funds through a 3rd party micro finance NGO - to be investigated assuming some funding accrues from this venture, as yet not a certainty, thanks for your interest, Alan
