Bletchingley 2/3

Postby Paul H » Sat Apr 09, 2011 7:23 pm

Well done to Sylv today on a cracking ride who I am sure will post a report soon. No tricks from me today though

Big thanks to all the support, marshals and organisers.

Unfortunately I have heard that Dan Gower had a nasty accident cycling back from Bletch and has been taken to hosiptal so fingers crossed for him. I will post an update if I hear anything.

 Hope you're OK Dan.

My race today barely got started. Followed a wheel into a hole and got a front wheel flat. Superb neutral service 8) & I was just approaching the rear of the race convoy when the rear went flat (damange from original incident). This time I got a spare at the bottom ot the Outwood climb, so no real chance of getting back on the bunch for a second time.

Here's one taken by Tom. It was pretty tough work out there marshalling but we got through it somehow.

Sorry to hear about Dan, I hope you're better soon.

Shame the break couldn't stay clear of the chase group Sylv, although they had twice as many to chase you down. NEG didn't give us a time gap so couldn't help out but timed the gaps and phoned my Dad to let you know. hope you could hear them through the whoosh of deep section wheels :) .

Well done, great race, and a good 5th.

My Dad took these pics while he was marshalling and then a few at the finish, bit smaller than planned as there was a mix up in the resize for the upload but they're perfectly big enough for forum use.

The foul mouthed winner who swore completely unnecessarily as he crossed the line and looked an idiot for doing so. Particularly unimpressive as there was at least one small child there with her Mum.

Hi all
update- went to Mayday A&E lat night as was getting varying reports on the severity of Dan's injuries
he's ok. Has a big haemorragy on his left abdomen which was lucky not to damage any internal organs. Very close to liver though so the doctor ordered complete immobility for some time until it resorbs. also we think a broken elbow, but nothing else. He was in good spirits, though also under morphine.

Dan rode back from Bletchingley after the race with Beckie and Kate and just after parting ways went through the windshield of a car that we think didn't see him as it exited a junction. Bike broken in two. The girls had looked after him for the last 4h at the hospital. there are visits today at 11am, in ward Queens 2 http://www.croydonhealthservices.nhs.uk ... 0times.pdf

Think the race report can wait a little while!

Terrible news about Dan, hope it improves rapidly.
Spent a great sociable working afternoon with him (along with Pete K, Ilya and Paul D), marshalling in the sun at the far point turn, so what a spoiler. Driving back, Jean and I saw aftermath of what looked like a bad accident; someone lying on the ground surrounded by medics, couldn't see more. This was at the feed-in road to the M25 at the big roundabout just north of Godstone - was this Dan? Get well soon, feller.

Great pictures from Mr Green Senior and Anthony. Andrew,I totally agree about the Race Winner - considering he clearly had the race won with at least 10-15 metres to go was there really a need for all the profanity on the line (maybe kids are not the only ones influenced by sporting celebrations, good job there wasn't a film crew on the line  ) Once again well done everyone who raced and pats on the back for flawless Tunnell organisation and marshalls.

I hope we get some reports: what was the pace like? when did the second break catch the 1st?; who was working who wasn't?; who stole Robs legs? Did Richard manage to get up after he cross the finish line?

Dan is doing well and off the drugs. Will have to stay in the ward up to a week though as he is not allowed to move. Doesn't seem to be any broken bones in the arm in the end, but fractured rib.
He has been supplied with brioche and jam in true French training camp fashion. And a bunch of cycling mags. Couldn't get the tiny tv to show Roubaix though unfortunately.
Visiting times daily are 11-12.30 and then in the afternoon I think it's from 3pm, but definitely till 8pm.

Thanks to all the helpers and supporters in the race, was great. I've heard some apologising for cheering too loudly
Race report ... Monday!
