Cheap Cycling Gear

Postby Toks » Thu Apr 14, 2011 4:04 pm

It looks like the popularity of cycling has finally hit mainstream shops. Last week I was out shopping for trainers with my son and noticed inexpensive cycling gear in both TK Maxx and Sports Direct.Com. The look and quality seemed OK, most of the tops were £10-15 - probably not for the Rapha and Assos aficionados though  :D

I picked up a "boil in the bag" Karrimor jacket from sports direct for £12. Seems well made and is waterproof, not very breathable but does the job.

Lidl and Aldi do some good cycling gear too when their specials come around. Got a softshell Autumn/Winter jacket from Aldi for £15 and it's brilliant.

As a general rule you get what you pay for and cheaper kit doesn't pass muster when push comes to shove.

The Aldi stuff has been excellent though. I've had some thermal base layers from them which are superb, I think they were down in a motorbike promo as motorcyclists base layer, and the above mentioned softshell jersey. The only negative is it only has two normal sized pockets on the back and just a space in the middle where you'd normally get a third pocket. Other than that it is fantastic VFM and at least as good as ones I've used which cost £50-£60 and has all the nice attention to detail touches you only normally get on more expensive clothing like beard guard on the zip and a good quality hem gripper. I have no idea how they can knock them out at £15 but for all I know that's what they normally cost from the sweatshops and it just adds £50 to the price to have a Gore label sewn in...or £150 if it's a Rapha label.

That's just for the track mitts with the Paul Smith stripey trim

I believe you'll find that cycling with a beard is technically illegal, which is why most sensible manufacturers don't include said item - it just encourages law breaking

Cycling with a beard is legal but only if you have toestraps and panniers.

Beard-guard is just a tad snappier than 2-to-3-days-stubble-because-you-haven't-bothered-shaving-at-the-weekend-snagging guard.
