Etape Cymru

Hello All,

One of my buddies has organised a closed roads sportive in Wales for October. Details are on the links below. I have ridden most of the route with him about a month ago and is fantastic scenary, includes some fantastic and tough climbs. I have entered it, would be good to get a good showing from the ACC.

See www.etape-cymru.co.uk - only the second closed road sportive after Etape Caledonia. The event is being held on Sunday 9th October and is a 100miles long with over 6000ft of climbing most of which is in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Cost is £65 for non British Cycle Members (£53 British Cycle Members). For £65 you not only get entry but at least:

- free British Cycle Ride Membership (worth £24)
- gilet (rrp £20)
- multi-tool (rrp £5.99)

Wow! it sounds great Marek, I'd want a picture and thorough description of the Gilet in question to before getting seduced into parting with almost £70. Also the event is being described as a 'race' on both links which is fine as long as you stay crash free. But if you take a nasty fall, is ride membership still gonna cover you?

Good point on the race terminology. Not sure if he should term it as that, but I think in general people will get the gist that it is a sportive. I will have a word with the organiser to see if he knows the score on that front.

I am entering more for the closed roads, I am realistic as to the quality of the gillet, it ain't gonna be Rapha. I have ridden most of the route and it is a fantastic area.

A sportive is not a race and shouldn't be described as such. There's no race back up or race suport that you would have in a BC santioned race. I'd make sure that they change it Marek or they could find themselves getting tied up in a lot of red tape at best and in a lot of trouble at worst.

Its cool, they know, they are going to change their site to say something like event start instead of race start, can't do anything about the overzealous publicist they used who described it as a race which then got put on BBC, he has been replaced apparently.

In relation to the cost, I think it is pretty comparable with the Caledonian one.

Thanks Marek for posting this. The route looks very similar to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct Challenge that I did a couple of years ago, so comes highly recommended from me. I felt quite strong going up the Horseshoe Pass, and even enjoyed the view - it was just the following 90 odd miles that did me in.
That was held on a hot, sunny June day (rare conditions for that region!) so I suspect that the weather may provide a further challenge on this ride...
