My first 50

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

There's a useful short guide to TT pacing by Dr. Hutch in this week's CW. Not worth buying the magazine for though - read it in the newsagent

Looks good, but I'm doing the Dartford Bridge Olympic Triathlon that day. The Outlaw (IM distance) is on the 24th July :? Lucy

Ouch thats soon, your nuts :D
Bike route says undulating maybe worth entering a couple of longer spoco SE TTs to get the hills in?. Or do 2-3 days of the wessex sportive (not sure of dates of hand),doesn't answer your nutrition and tubs q's though.......

Good news and bad news re the Hounslow 100.

I should really slide a 100 in before the 24, and had intended to, but looking at the book this was the only practical option. With my previous bad experience there, a 6am start, and the fact I thought no-one else from the club would be doing it I’d crossed it from the list.

With at least one other Addiscombe there it will be a bit better as you can give me a nudge when you overtake me George if it looks like I’ve nodded off.

Bad news for me as it means I’ve got to find a way to remove my brain on a short term basis in the next few weeks, good news is according to the CTT website the start has been moved to 8am.

As George says you can be self sufficient there. I’m happy to do it unsupported, 2 bottles on the bike, spare tub and 2 more bottles (rocket booster style) behind the saddle, and a little bag of flapjack on the top tube. Plenty of laybys too so you can leave a bag with a couple of bottles in and do a brief stop and switch if you prefer.

Okay I've put my money where my mouth is, and the 100  entry is in the post. Hoping I can get "saddle comfortable" before then . . . :x

Ditto.

I expect this to be "a learning experience".

Sadly my plan to get the boy to hand up bottles is spoiled by the fact that the boy will be away at scout camp.

At least there's a pub near the end.
Thats a good point about water bottles for 100. I want to be self sufficient on the bike, any advice on where best to fit an extra bottle. Between bars, or behind the seat post?? Not sure how either of these fit.

I used to finish four bottles on a 100 (greedy!) and either convince Mrs Snoop to throw new ones at me or I'd drive out to a certain point on the course and leave 'em there and hope no one nicked/doped 'em!

Good luck for the 50 8)

One of these Lucy. It's easy to fit and reach bottles from it, just fit your cages of choice but tight ones are better so your bottles don't jump out if you hit a bump. I can fit a saddle pack on with this as well to carry a spare tub and CO2 pump.

Maybe a naive question, but I'm assuming you guys go with skinsuits and put gels etc. elsewhere. I've got one of those tri-bags which I reckon will take a few of those mini pork pies.

Mrs. H. was in a good mood yesterday and suggested she could pass up bottles. That mood may have passed now. We'd only need one passer up between us if they have organized stuff and know who's who - I can easily be mistaken for Andrew.

I've used shorts and jersey and put stuff in the pockets. I would rather go skinsuit for nether comfort so will have cut up energy bars and flapjack in a tribag on the top tube and stuff gels up the legs. May tape a gel or two to the frame as well.

I'll leave a carrier bag in a layby with extra bar(s) and (gels) and a couple of spare bottles as back up in case I need them. A quick stop at the top of the Chicken kick up won't be a problem.

By the way Rob uses a camelback for 100s squeezed under his skinsuit. Don't fancy it myself due to weight and sweatiness on my back but it works well for him.

Cages - I've found bontrager bat cages good on the bike lately, old school metal ones are good because you can bend them in a bit for a tight fit. A tip I picked up from someone was to also use elastic bands to hold the saddle bottles snug when they're fjull. You can still remove them with a bit more of a tug, not to be attempted when on the tribars, and it doesn't matter about empties.
