No. Whilst the death of Wouter Weylandt is a tragic and very sad event I don't buy into all this over the top sentimental bollox. Stupid meaningless gestures really annoy me, everyone jumps on the pity bandwagon as though they're doing something amazing and worthwhile.

Me, I'll be just riding my bike and enjoying it, something that Wouter Weylandt loved doing himself. Fitting enough in my book.

People like to show their respect in different ways and it’s nice to see that cyclist around the world can unite in any way they see fit to pay their tributes to a pro racer who died so tragically. I believe the black arm band Saturday is also for a amateur rider who died recently. Good on them for making the effort and at the end of the day you have a choice to whether you want to participate in this or not. Isn’t freedom of choice a wonderful thing. :D

Although, having seen the collective wailing and teeth-gnashing that befell parts of the populace when Princess Di's drunk driver stacked it in Paris you have to wonder how these people are going to mourn somebody they actually know and love.

Make that two minutes, cos I punctured a brand new Conti jobby after just 11 miles on Sunday's Mayflyer.

And let's avoid going past the golf course, otherwise they'll think we're armbanded up for poor old Seve.

Oh, and Luton - they'll think we're mourning OBL

of course, the club shirt does have a black band around the arm as part of its design. So, just wear your club top and then it's up to you whether you are observing it or not.

Sorry Sean, my Italians not up to scratch

The only word I know in Italian is melodrammatico...I'm sure you can work out for yourself what it means

[quote="Sean Hogan"]Live pointless gestures galore in the Giro.

Sean

Considering a lot of them are probably his friends, not pointless at all.

Sean, I think you've missed the point.

The riders (and others) on the Giro have lost a friend, a colleague, a teammate/training partner etc. It's very sad for them. Natural for them to want to show respect.

I, on the other hand, didn't know the guy. For me to put on a public show of mourning feels false and a bit tacky - although it is a very sad event.
