Palace 10/05

Postby Sylv » Wed May 11, 2011 11:12 am

My first round this year. Was looking forward to it a lot. Am still not doing any real focused training, but ridden and raced myself into a certain degree of fitness. Got there as early as I possibly could (6.10pm) in order to assure myself a spot on the start line, Rob and Carl were in the 3/4, but some of us like Steve and Adam weren’t that lucky and got turned away, I felt real bad for them. Upon signing on I saw that the number above mine had been reserved for a certain Jo Rowsell, yes her of World level track fame, and who used to ride with us in the 3/4 race a few years back. It was nice to have a bit of sun still shining on the grass as it was so early, it soon got chilly though. The ACC marshals soon turned up and were assigned to their role by Toks (and Amy).

So because of the limit I think there were only 22 of us in the E12. It started quite fast and after a few laps the average speed was over 41. Jake Martin was having digs at the front, but everyone was still fresh. I think it was soon enough that Felix English (yes, him of the Chris Hoy upset) shot off solo and spent most of the race this way, very impressive. I was feeling fine until I got myself at the front when it all became a little harder. I was trying to get in a break. The one that stuck was when Ian Paine shot off on the bottom of the climb, to join Felix, I did try my hardest as I was at the front and following, but just couldn’t bridge, Sam Humpheson was a little ahead of me and had to give up too.

The Dynamos were now easing off at the front with their man in the break. Jake had a good rest then managed to jump across on his own, he beat Tony Gibb you know, and after that Hugo Humphrey joined him. From then on I found myself at the front more often than I’d wished, first to try and keep the pace reasonably high, then having a few attacks just before the hairpin after the finish line, where I can get a 10m gap if I take it nice and fast. Trouble is I don't have the weight to carry it on the downhill. So were always brought back. Guy Powdrill managed to jump away on one of the final laps with one Sigma I think, but next thing we knew they were both down at the bottom corner, him not looking best pleased and with ripped shorts, hope it’s ok.

So lining up for a sprint for 6th, I took the wheel of an In Gear rider which proved a good choice, though I did get worried when he launched himself halfway up the climb, but I stuck to it, and almost managed to come past on the line. I think 7th is my best result. Thanks again to all the nice people of Addiscombe for coming, and see you next week (bright and early).

Sorry - normal service resumes next week with Steve's over-enthusiastic reports full of :D :) :( :o  :? 8) :x :P       :!: :?:   :|

First time even watching a race let alone doing one this year. Me and my son (Oisin) turned up just in time to get a new shiny marshalling bib, flag and whistle (!) prior to the junior racing. Weather was nice and warm at first. The e12 race looked quite hard as it seemed Felix English was setting a high pace. From my pov he was out on his own for a few laps , then rejoined the group for a rest before setting off again. Later on joined by Ian Paine, who looked in pain ( bad pun) following Mr English's wheel. Oisin commented on Ian's facial expressions a few times, whilst Felix was like Sylv, i.e. little expression, just a determined look (again noticed by Oisin). On the last lap Felix rode away from Ian to win solo. Well done Sylv for getting 7th.

Overall the racing looked a bit safer with the smaller field, but still confusion over passing etiquette with a variety of shouts etc, not always clear to the poor rider being passed.

It was much harder to keep track of the 34 race as it spread out over the course, but I think it stayed together pretty much for a bunch sprint? apart from the usual dropped riders. I don't know the outcome.

It felt safe last night, but then again I've never felt unsafe there.

Good going of Oisin to keep track of everyone's facial expressions! Will try pull a tongue next time to see what he makes of that?

My first and probably only visit to Palace this year. :( I was marshall (1) the main entry gate to the park. It was quite interesting to watch people take the hairpin. Lots of people were very tentative and in a couple of cases literally crept around the bend. I might be biased but I didn't see anyone take the bend as smoothly as a certain Mr S. Garde. 8) Well done to Rob (better aerodynamic number pining required sir  ), most people get dropped on the first visit to Palace so that was an excellent first showing. 8) Equally well done to Carl who settled down after a slightly nervy first few laps :D...As Sylv mentioned gutted for Steve and Adam not getting a ride - the authorities really need to sort it out. Once again, thanks to all the ACC Marshalls and their children :D
[quote]Hi Toks

Thanks to you and your club mates for turning out last night.

Without support from clubs like yours, racing at Crystal Palace would not go on

So thanks again

Well done Sylv that is some great racing. You just look sooo good and comfortable in the pics, you really could dominate up there this year, you and Steve should have some fun together racing under the Aerial.

Good Luck with the circuit races, I wont be racing at Palace this year as it is not specific enough for my time trialling, but hopefully I'll be there to cheer you on once or twice.

Cheers George :D Shame not to see you but the TT results are worth it, yes looking forward to riding with Steve next time.

Well you've made the most of the very little light available down there, especially in the first pic, like that one too.
My favourite that I've taken at Palace were sitting inside the right-hand turn just before the downhill, panning on the rider with the flash on. And that was using my little Canon G5 camera!

Mine looks spot on :)

A bit of experiment these. A chance to salvage something from the photos that were too blurred to show properly.
