Brake adjustment

Postby Iliya » Tue May 24, 2011 12:13 am

Hi

I replaced brake pads the other day and noticed that they wear unevenly. Rear end of the pad touches the rim before the front one and consequently wears quicker. This seems to be the problem with the pad on the right hand side only.

Does anyone know if this can be adjusted?

Thanks in advance!

Assuming your brakes have some degree of adjustment (not all do), place a piece of card between the rear of the pad and the rim. (The backing card from the replacement brake pads is an ideal thickness.) Hold the brakes against the rim with the lever. Loosen the brake pad holder. Re-tigthen the holder. It should now be set with the forward end of the pad just touching first when you brake. This should give you the best braking performance, prevent squeal and give pretty even pad wear.

That's the way I set up mine anyway.

You should have a washer between the pad holder and the brake itself. Just loosen the bolt holding the pad holder and turn turn the washer a few degrees, the washer is shaped to allow adjustment for alignment to the rim. Tighten back up and repeat till the front of the pad just touches before the rear as this will stop any brake squeal

Hope that makes sense?

Or try Keiths method as he beat me to it :D

Best to get your mechanic to do it while you hold onto the team car going uphill, eh Mr Cavendish.

If I had a team car to support me in the mountains, I'd be pretty sure to need my brakes adjusting, or be regularly collecting "sticky" bottles for my teammates.

Cheers guys!!

I noticed the shaped washer but it just wouldn't stay in place when I initially tried to fit the new pad. Trick with the card helped but still not ideal. I'm starting to think that caliper is bent.
