A cold and misty start to the day, but the promise of later sun-and beer-lifted my spirits.
Not up quite as early as finbar, but still early and my brekkie hadn't settled at all well, a quick warm up on the turbo and off to the start burping loudly-charmin'.
By the time I got to the start it was glorious and stayed that way, not even a little breeze.
Mr Yates was off 1 min behind me- so of course I went out nice and easy-not.
Straight up the col de moorhead then thrash myself stupid up to the turn- Dom said he would catch me by the 2nd RAB, but I held him off until the turn.I started to feel a little bit better now so I was able to give it some welly- right let's keep him in sight..........yeah right, he was turning a pretty big fixed gear with what looked like a dustbin lid front ring conversion. I did however catch up with him....in the car park.
A nice flying finish with for once a stationary chequered flag.
Pleased with a nice short 24 PB- I reckon now I could do a mid 23 over at Bentley.
Arriving at the HQ I noticed that Robert had a DNF, puncture was my guess. Turns out that he had come a cropper at the RAB before the turn and was taken away by ambulance- to a place unknown or so it seemed.
It took Joanna about 20 mins ringing every A&E in Surrey and Sussex, ambulance control, minor injuries units, dominos, pizza hut,Tom Cobbley............eventually he was tracked down to the first place she had rung- East Surrey Hosp.
The rider who was following Robert kindly stayed with him and wheeled his bike to the turn marshal who in turn bought it back to HQ after the event. Thanks guys.
Now, we had his bike- his car was locked- off to ESH to get the key, to get the car back to a more local area.
We had just arrived when I had a call from Tony saying that they had found Robs bag back at HQ, when they were clearing up- you know the drill- back to HQ to get the key that opens the door.........
Anyhoo, Rob has a nice large cut above the eye, spectacular bruising around the eye and the whole side of his face, road rash on both knees, forearms, knuckles and the rear of his right shoulder and is stiffening up nicely.
"I guess I won't make the 50 tomorrow" were the first words- honest
, followed shortly by " reckon I'll be OK for the club 10 tho" nails that boy, nails.
He was fed, watered , coked and chocolated- he must have been starving-then we took him home. All good.
Great time today by the" silver fox" 23.18- I reckon he must have shown his buss pass and had his start moved up the first hill and did a SCCU 9! Mr Mc you must be very slippery!
