Hounslow 100

Postby Andrew G » Sun May 29, 2011 10:01 am

DNS for me. Everything prepared and ready to go, got up, made tea, sat on sofa to drink it, fell asleep and woke up 20mins before my start time. Oops  .

Never done that before. I hope it went well for the others particularly Phil and Lucy in their debut 100s.

Well my excuse is not great! Wasn't looking forward to the wind or the tedium of 5 laps but wanted it in my legs. I'll be doing a different sort of 100 tomorrow instead, have a shufty in the Rides bit if you CBA :D .

That sounds much better however I have to do Bank Holiday visiting. I am off all week for half term so will be able to rack some miles up during the week :D

oops!,must be that epic you did last w.end catching up with you Andrew.....
It was a blustery ride again down in Hampshire on the A3 for the Army CU 25 today. 25k's in and just ahead of me there was a serious accident between a motorbike and car. Police came and blocked the A3 both ways,2 helicopters came hope the poor guy is ok. Must admit i thought my push of time of 9.14 was a bit late for a bank hols on such a busy road. Needless to say it was race over for me and the 14 other entrants behind me :(

Well, that was interesting. Along from the start to the first turn, spinning along, big gear no effort, looking at the scenery admiring some new tarmac. Then the first turn and BAM! Like riding into a duvet full of custard. Gale force (OK, apparently 20mph gusting to 40) headwind. The next 10 miles is remarkably unpleasant just trying to maintain any sort of speed. Back on the downwind leg and it becomes bearable again, average speed starts to recover.

Anyway, by the 5th time into the wind legs are really hard to turn over. Struggle to the final turn and know that it's all OK ... apart from a couple of little uphills.

I know I went off too fast. Passed Lucy at about 30 miles, first 50 in 2:19 something (which I'd be happy with if I did a 50). Last lap was hell.

Don't know who won - although when Nick Bowdler (Mr 77 tooth chainring) passed me on the downwind leg he was moving at extreme speed. Our times:

Lucy: 5:01:50
Me: 4:46:18
Rob: 4:34:2?
PvT: DNF

Broke my target of 5 hours. Lucy was just outside but did go for a run afterwards rather than having a corned beef sarnie and a beer.

I may need to go and lie down now.

Well done, you bunch of nutters

Andrew, that is the worst excuse I've heard. I think you should've come up with a better one

That accident sounded nasty - bad luck for those caught up by it but even worse for those actually in it...

Well done lads and lass, Good first 100s Lucy and Phil and well done battling through the wind, it does tend to run up and down that course if it's there. Annoyed at falling asleep and missing it but I listen to my body and if it needed the sleep then so be it, more to do with a busy week at work than anything I think.

NikB does move rather quickly doesn't he, even if his legs don't.

Glad to have that one done and dusted :D
Did my usual stress bunny routine before the start, thanks to Rob for your help.
So it was windy, and I really struggled in places to get any decent speed, got knocked side ways a few times.
As always I over catered with food. Still have enough left in my tri box to host a nibbles party tonight. Went a bit over board on fluid as well, put it down to experience!
I rode 50 miles quite comfortably, maybe could have pushed a bit harder. The 3rd lap was the hardest for me, and this is where I lost the most time, it felt as if the wind really picked up then.
I was happy that I'm starting to find the longer distances less taxing mentally. Although I did sing a bit of "ten green bottles" and "5 little specked frogs sat on a specked log". And every time I spotted Phil I gave myself the task of naming a pie  Shame not to see other ACC's out, but it sounds like your body was trying to tell you something Mr
Really good experience for the IM, and yes I did managed a short run after - still not sure what that marathon is going to feel like
Be good to get under 5 hours next time . . . Yes I said it "Next time" :D :D

Lucy.

If you can do 5:01 today, then getting under 5 hours will be a piece of cake without the wind. Probably do about four and a half on a calm day :D

Interesting to see the 50 mile split times; Lucy lost a lot less than you or Rob in the second half.
I wonder how evenly matched the first and second half of Mr  's kip were?

Wind got stronger. Honest.

Looking at the Garmin data, it seems that I did ride four sub 24 minute 10s.
