very concise and to the point marek, perhaps we should invite pc cox out on a cycle ride, as i'm sure that if he isn't a cyclist he just doesn't have any appreciation of what its like for cyclists on the road, and how well we all communicate about cars etc and holes on rides

[quote="fortuns"]Quite simply I do not think jo public has any comprehension that cyclists are within their rights to ride two-abreast. I have no doubt in my mind that this is what is causing all the complaints...

Ditto

When car drivers complain to the police they should be referred to the highway code or be made to re-sit their theory test as they seem to be unaware of the rules of the road.

I'm a driver been so now since 1996 and must say that on the road I have seen a few near miss with cyclist and drivers. Also seen bad cyclist jumping red lights.
what we need is advert like you see with motor bikes warning car drivers to bee more observant. And how to over take cyclist which i think should be a car width or more..

The reason for my letter is that we have also had increased reports of anti social and inconsiderate cycling, in particular complaints about groups of cyclists blocking roads by cycling in "pelotons".

I too have seen some anti-social and inconsiderate cycling. I have also seen at least equal amounts of anti-social and inconsiderate driving. Being a regular Surrey driver, I've yet to receive a similar letter from the police regarding this.

One issue I have is with in particular complaints about groups of cyclists blocking roads by cycling in "pelotons". A group of two abreast cyclists is indeed a peloton, but how is this blocking roads? Since when did motorists have priority over cyclists? Any car driver wishing to overtake simply has to await a safe opportunity to do so. On a narrow country lane, a motorist may have to be patient for a number of minutes. Perhaps us cyclists don't appreciate just how important these complaining car drivers are?
We as a club, could probably be more considerate to others in the size of groups that tend to form on the way back from the cafe though. This can make it difficult to overtake safely for a fair distance.

Marek,

Great letter ... though not sure about the reference to naturist groups:

"Naturism, often called nudism, has as many definitions as there are naturists. It is both a Belief and a Way of Life. The International Naturist Federation, which represents millions of naturists around the world, including all members of British Naturism, describes it as:

"A way of life in harmony with nature characterised by the practice of communal nudity, with the intention of encouraging self-respect, respect for others and for the environment.""

I have not noticed this being particularly prevalent at CSS!

PS is the next club run to Brighton next Sunday?

Dear PC Plod.

I am writing to thank you for your totally unblinkered and unbiased view of the way us hoodlums on 2 wheels are tearing up the lanes of Surrey and its surrounding counties and terrorising the local residents into blasting their horns and mouthing obscenities as they over take us having been held up for all of 5 seconds. Its so refreshing that you've obviously gone to great lengths in obtaining evidence of the atrocities we are committing by simply riding our bikes legally and in according to the highway code.

I shall deal with your letter how I see fit by printing a copy of it and using it in the bottom of my grandmothers budgie cage. (I was going to wipe my arse on it but we all know how nasty paper cuts can be)

I sincerely hope reading my reply hasn't used up any of your valuable time and your able to continue in investigating the incident I reported 2 years ago when I was hit by a bus and gave you all the details you needed including bus number, registration, driver name and number and route. I guess its taking time to piece together the evidence as its obviously a very complicated offence despite the driver admitting fault.

Thank you.

Hey Mark,

You obviously are not mixing in the right circles, around Leith Hill and Box Hill it is renowned for naturist activity. We also get a lot of it around Ashdown Forest near East Grinstead.

Cheers

Sorry guys, but I've re-read the policeman's letter and I can't see the bit where he claims that motorists never commit offences - in fact it doesn't seem to specifically mention motorists at all so I can't see the relevance of bringing them into the discussion. Nor can I see the bit where he says that riding two abreast is not allowed - in fact it seems to say the opposite to me.

What PC Cox appears to be saying is "Don't be an inconsiderate d1ck". And the responses are "yeah but motorists do this and that". As I said the letter isn't about motorists. It's like saying "Well, let's ignore bike theft because what Hitler did was much worse".

(And thus he invoked Godwin's law, and left)

PS: I think a public safety film campaign pointing out how to drive around cyclists might be helpful. There are some drivers out there who are beyond education though.

Never mind about Godwin's law, what about the universal bike forum law which states that all cyclists must always be exonerated because of the behaviour of some motorists ?

Quite a few posters have accepted that there are indeed sometimes stupid cyclists, which appears to be the whole point of PC Cox's letter. But that doesn't detract from the fact that PC Cox has no right to mention it - he deserves to receive a stroppy, sarcastic, and withering response, for his troubles.

I know I am not an active member over in the Surrey lanes anymore but it is worth noting that he sent you a letter of advice - no matter what can be read between the lines. Over here there are communities which have banned cycling on the main roads through their towns, where more than 2 abreast is very illegal and where it is enforced regularly. Not to mention the b$strds in NYC who actively set up speed traps and camp out at intersections waiting to clothesline any cyclist committing a minor infraction.

I had the thought that the police are very aware of the coming RR and want to keep it. If for any reason the unreasonable elements of the communities through which the RR passes decide to kick up a fuss it is possible the course would be changed. Maybe he is trying to pre-empt issues.

One of many solutions could be to create signage along the 'trafficed' areas of the course that highlight it is part of the course for 2012 and to stress the importance of 'sharing the road' as more cyclists are using these areas. Maybe part of the cost could be carried by 'sponsoring' clubs of Surrey?

Anyway - enjoy the hills and the rain. It's as flat and windy as hell here in the Midwest.

Cheers,

Steve

For my part I thought the letter from PS Cox was measured and an entirely reasonable general notice to be sent out to cycling clubs in the area.
