SCU 50 TT

Postby carl f » Sun Jun 05, 2011 12:42 pm

Lucy, Jim.B and myself this morning from ACC/trisport news up for another very windy ride on the G50/10 course down in Sussex. I was off at 6.42 so left the house very early to get there for 5.30.
Being my 1st 50 i was slightly unsure how to pace it but remembered what andrew said about ride it like two back to back 25's,well in theory yes but with todays conditions and super strong head winds that went out the window
Past the half way point with 59 ish on the clock and feeling not too bad and thought i might be sub 2 but then at around 68k's where the final turn round point onto the A24 is i bonked big time and crawled back into a massive head wind going down to about 15mph! nearly climbing off the bike at one point.
Finally sighted the checkered flag but had nothing to give for that final push. Despite the as usual very friendly well run Sussex events it was the worse time i have had in a TT this year
Finished in 2.03.20 which i guess considering the conditions was not too bad and to give some indication Niall Digby finished in 1.59 which for his standards is way down i think
Jim i think was 2.05 something also having a bad time and Lucy finished in an amazing 2.20 something i think, thats after a 100 last week and the 3.8k Ironman swim yesterday!,fantastic stuff Lucy......

Thats a great time for your first 50 Carl,

I've not got the courage yet to give it a go- nor the legs!
It was so windy today, I have just come back from the Ardingly tri-(watching the other half)- and it's been blowin a gale all morning- luckily the rain held off until right near the end.

Pacing strategy.... thats something I really struggle with, but I'm working on it.

Well not quite back to back 25s but you do only knock it back a touch which takes a bit of getting you head round as it's twice as far.

I haven't ridden that course but know it's not an easy/quick one. Good first 50 Carl particularly with a bonk, and great ride Lucy taking 8 minutes off your pb on a harder course :D . I though Jim had said he was going to pay a kid to kick him in the balls for two hours rather than ride another 50  .

I wasn't sure if my legs were up to the job this morning, after a 3.8k Arun river Ironman swim yesterday - Great event, down the Arun, the second fastest tidal river in the UK, into Littlehampton. It's a fast swim, as its timed to carry you out on the tide. So bit tired from that, with a slightly mashed toe as I bashed it on the slipway racing another swimmer out of the water

Anyway, another early windy one this morning! Nearly got lost on the way to the start, realised at the end that I'd followed the arrow to the finish. But got myself back on track with a bit of female intuition, made the start with plenty of time, received a confidence boasting push and was on my way. I liked the course, nice mix of twisty roads and dual carriageway. With my Garmin watch now mounted on the bike, I decided to get technical and worked out milage markers and the times I needed to reach them by. This worked really well, and I was well up on my planned time of 2hrs 25 by 37 miles . . . Then I reached the A24 and WIND. The final push up from the turnabout point at Findon was very hard, the last 2 miles being the worse of all. I knew the finish wasn't on the A24, but was still surprised by just how much further on it was. Paranoia kicked in as I passed HQ, had I gone the wrong way? Another turn down a lane and finally the chequered flag . . . and a new PB 2hrs 26:14 8)

Back to HQ for tea and some tasty marmalade cake, and compression tights! Had a good IM chat with Jim, whose time was 2hrs 05. Well done Carl on your time. Rupert Redhill was looking very happy with a cracking time (1hr 49 I think??) and a bottle of fizz for fastest man. Can't remember fastest lady, but I was very pleased to collect my bottle of wine for 2nd lady  . . . and another bottle for 2nd fastest improved time :D

All in all a great weekends sport :D off out for a run in a mo . . . :)

Thanks!
Enjoy your plonk Lucy fully deserved. Ian take the plunge and enter a 50 they are err really fun :D . Lucy is it the adamo racing 2 saddle you have?,been looking online but there is a couple of different models, really need to sort that out before the next 50 as its pretty raw in the never region today. My spech saddle with the santini skin suit is fine for a 25 but today i couldn't get settled on the saddle having to constantly shuffle around
1.49 how did Redhill manage that!

"never region". Top Freudian slip. After the 100, I think I need a different saddle for my "rarely region".

Well done Lucy. I've put in for a 50 on June 19th but have have been a bit late getting in.Interested to try one though - but the G53 course looks like a real roundabout fest.

I used a saddle called Profile Design when I TTed. I think Rob RE uses one too. Of course you should try some different ones but the PD has a soft nose (fnarr) and suited me very well. I didn't have any saddle related issues 8)

Re your saddle/undercarriage woes, what are you currently using? A normal road saddle? TT saddles tend to have a more padded nose, I use an Arione TT, also use plenty of chamois cream, the longer the distance the more you slather on :P .

This must be the forums hottest topic

Carl- I have in my possession an Adamo saddle- the road/multisport one - in a fetching white with a black pattern on top.
You are welcome to try it out and see what you think, I've had a few goes with it- not racing tho, only on't turbo.
First impression was yes its ok, but then I was forever fiddling with it.... I have now gone back to the original saddle -selle italia SLR -TT, no probs with the gooch at all with that one.
The adamo does feel a little harsh and I did watch the video about the installation and TBH never really gave it a fair chance- primarily because I want to use the bike for training not faffing.
Anyhoo if you want a loan for a while you are welcome to borrow it, they are fairly expensive to buy- I can bring it to the club 10 on tuesday and hand it to one of the other riders who will deffo live closer to you- thats if you know any of them- and you can collect from them.
