BRIGHTON (AND BACK) CLUB RUN 25th JUNE 2011

On road, off road, round in a big circle or down to the coast, we do the lot. We don't just do it at all speeds and for all levels, we do it Agreeably as well!

BRIGHTON (AND BACK) CLUB RUN 25th JUNE 2011

Postby Jon C C on a Bianchi » Sun Jun 19, 2011 12:38 pm

This Saturday (25th June) it's the second of this year's Captain's Coastal Rides to Brighton. Hooray!!! :D :D

The usual CR is abandoned. The Regency Restaurant is expecting us and has stocked up on pasta and Nonna's is already making the cakes - a free slice courtesy of the club to everyone who manages the 'there and back'. :D

TAKE CARE IF RIDING DOWN SCOTT'S HILL IN OUTWOOD - THAT POTHOLE STILL ISN'T REPAIRED. We had 6 punctures in 6 seconds last month. I will definitely be avoiding that WHOLE stretch or road ( :lol: get it? hole, whole - oh, never mind)

Don't forget we leave earlier and later than the usual CR:

* 8.20 15 mph group : Tim :D John Cz :D Phil N :D
* 8.40 16 mph group: John S :D
* 9.00 17 mph group : JonC :D Lucy :D
* 9.20 18 mph group : Del :D
* 9.40 19 mph group : Nick :D Mark :D Stephen :D
*10.00 20 mph group : Phil H :D
* 10.05 Training group

that is LEAVING time so get there a bit earlier.

It's a grand day out. Ditchling Beacon is always fun! Be there or be square!! 8)
Looking forward to it.

Awesome, looking forward to it. Especially riding with a group over a decent distance. I've done 2 sportive over the last 2 weeks, which felt like really long TT's for most of the way!

17s for me!

I should have said: anyone that wants a ride out but can't make Brighton can ride down to Turners Hill with a group and then ride back.

Would have liked to come along, but with Andrew starting his 24 Hour TT at 12.27pm in East Sussex, and Jean and I as key members of the Helpers Detail, can't see me making it!

I can't go due to the arrival of a visiting American cousin but I will be leading an alternative from Coulsdon leaving around 9.15 destination to be confirmed but heading in the Kent direction

I'm going to take the 17s now - hope to return via a different route to the usual via Newhaven (suggested by NickW). So if you're up for something a little different (and a bit longer) find me at the restaurant and join me for the return leg.

Having a couple probs with bike, some spokes have come loose so I have a wobbly rear wheel yet again. Hoping to get it fixed before Saturday, if not then it looks like Saturday will be a no goer.

Hi Argy

Good question. No, if it's rainy, wet and horrible we'll simply revert to the normal CR.

But weather forecast is good isn't it? I thought I'd booked sunshine for the 25th :D

Cheers

Went out on the alternative ride into Kent, thanks for having me along. Ride turned out a bit of a headache but that was my bikes fault. Top of first hill - ping spoke snapped, coming down last hill before coffee break - ping, there goes no.2. Thankfully the shop is gonna build me a new wheel with decent spokes.

Not bad 2 weeks old, 3 broken spokes within 1 week and also 3 or so loose spokes which were fixed on Friday. Other bike had similar problem with spokes breaking and again they rebuilt the wheel. Is this something about new bikes and the companies cutting corners?

Phew!! What a ride - just over 111 miles - and completely knackered! :shock: :shock:

'Led' the 17s but didn't feel particularly strong all day (note to self - things not to do on a Friday night before a captain's coastal - 3 mile run, 1 bottle of cabernet sauvignon, and several cans of carling). After taking the group on a tour of Redhill to pick up my forgotten water bottle :roll: (hope you all enjoyed the water feature BTW :D ) we headed up Redstone Hill - the first climb of the day - and we were soon strung out all over the place. Fairly obvious we were a very mixed ability group (that's teacher speak) with some of the faster guys not really wanting to wait so we organically split without even saying goodbye! Still at least we were left with a very Agreeable bunch :D Robyn, Ron, Peter, Julie, Lucy, JP and me. (not really sure where Lindsey and Alan got to).

Julie punctured just outside Copthorne and we had the mother of all battles trying to remove the tyre! :D 45 minutes, two broken tyre irons, and one broken finger later we were on the road again. Another delay at Turner's Hill Julie went off to get her tyre pumped up by a nice man but they couldn't get the pump nozzle on her short valve as her wheel had wide rims. Eventually after 30 minutes of faffing we were Brighton bound :D Got to the top of a very foggy/misty Ditchling Beacon and finally reached the Regency about 12.45. A nice relaxed lunch - excellent plate of seaford pasta and an expresso and - we were on our way - about 2.00 and way behind schedule.

Home via Seaford - with Phil, Tim, Ron, Lucy, Martin, George, Wayne, Mark, Alan, Del, JP, Marcus, JohnCz, and JohnS - and 5 miles into an incessant headwind - but it wasn't long before we were cycling north with the wind at our backs. Another puncture - this time Marcus - but a nice quick repair only delayed us by 15 minutes or so. Eventually the sun came out, we lost JohnCz and Tim (all on? yes! but they weren't :roll:), then Alan (all on? yes! he wasn't), then Del (just going for a pee and never seen again :shock: ),perhaps we need race radios? then JohnS bailed out for the train. We were down to 10 or was it 11? Five VCs and the captain and we could organise a p*ss up in a brewery!! :lol: :lol: :roll:

Anyway, got to Nonnas just after 6.00 - I was shattered - stomach cramps - feeling a bit sick but still room for latte and coffee and walnut cake, oh and some bloke slapped my arse as I was riding up the Merstham drag!! we'll I hope he got a thrill out of it! I did :lol:

Home by 7.15. All in all another great day out - thanks to everyone who made it so :D Let's do it again next month :D
