Chiropractor or osteopath.....which is better

Postby Marcus » Tue Jul 26, 2011 7:38 am

I have had some lower back pain and stiffness for a little while which hasn't been an issue, but recently my kneck and shoulders have been aching and clicking when moved.

I've had physio in the past but as it has been a while ago I'm not sure which of the two are better.
What are your experiences?

I always see a doc first.

Its all that chain mail you keep wearing!!

I had a dodgy shoulder and went to the British School of Osteopaphy, they crunched my spine about a bit and I was right as rain and as it was done by a student taking their final exams and I was asked if I'd mind some examiners popping in with clipboards the two sessions I had were free.

I've had on going shoulder problems for a couple of years. I had lots of sessions with an osteopath which really didn't do anything. Then I paid to see a physio, who after a couple of session said she couldn't do anything for me and wrote to my GP saying I needed an MRI. After being told I needed an operation on it - which I refused to consider - I went back to my doctor and asked to be referred to an NHS physio. And she was brilliant, very knowledgable but also very understanding that I still wanted to carry on training and swimming. It's fixed now :D
Might be worth a trip to the doctors first. I had to wait over 20 weeks for a physio appointment, wished I'd gone when it first started.

As Lucy and Dombo said, I'd be inclined to start with someone with a medical qualification.

NHS physio sorted out my back. Now if I could only remember to keep doing the exercises ...

Rather like taking a 5 grand bike to the BSO aisle at Tesco for a service

Thanks for all your feedback.

Now that I've had time to consider I think all index is a massage.

Unfortunately with fewer phone boxes I'm having trouble finding a reputable one.

Have you tried Gumtree? Their Personal Services section covers most of a gentleman's needs.

Marcus,

For a slightly different approach, I can highly recommend Jo McRae who helped me with an exercise programme to address my neck and back pain and really helped me to start cycling again.

www.jomcrae.co.uk

As well as one-to-one sessions she has some group sessions to teach stretching to cyclists(!). The next is on 3rd October though. She had an article in a recent Cycling Weekly, but I don't know which issue I'm afraid.

Her approach is that "cycling is quite an 'unatural' sport for us human beings, and suggest the importance of 'correcting' for this fact with a proactive approach to off the bike exercise"

Has anyone tried one of these? I tried them in HoF in Croydon and whilst they feel good, I was wondering if they actually help.
