I am old school and have a Canon EOS50E. My next camera will probably be another film jobby off ebay where such pro film gems as the EOS 3 now go for a couple of hundred quid if that.
However for digital I would get a Canon DSLR for the lens availability and the fact that I've already got Canon lenses. Just look at any sporting event - the white lenses are Canon. Nikon are good too and photo forums are full of Canon/Nikon flame wars rather like the Shimano/Campag argybargies that we bicyclists enjoy.
One thing I would check is shutter speed ie any lag between pressing the button and the thing actually responding. It may not be a problem with DSLRs but certainly is on even the better compacts as I found at school Sports Day and stage 1 of 2007 TdF.

An excellent site is http://photo.net/ which has advice, reviews etc

One reads the DT online. What does that say about one?

Back to cameras - go to a decent shop (or your local branch of Jessops) and try both the cameras out. Then buy the one you like best.

For one it was the Nikon, because one preferred both the physical feel of the camera's ergonomics and the way the software menus worked. Your mileage (as they say) may vary.

Canon.

Used them at college.

My mates a graphic designer and he has one.

A friend doing some uni junk using digital media has a canon.

My marketing department all have canons.

The guy who did my magazine feature used canon.

Canon is the way foreward.

Apologies for bumping this old thread, but what did you get in the end, Sean, and are you pleased with it?
I still have my film Canon and considering a DSLR to supplement it. Lenses I have are 28-105 and 100-300 EF so likely need a dedicated digital lens as I can't justify the expense of a pro body with no crop factor.

I have the D5000 and think that it is superb, especially the swivel screen to get odd angle shots and the vid capability. Everything else is spot on as you would expect from Nikon or Canon
