Henfold Hill 2/3 31/07

Keith Dan and me riding on Sunday. Hadn’t done this circuit before – well except on every clubrun of my life! Mostly flat-ish with the 17% kick of Henfold Hill, 7 laps for 88km and an uphill finish off the main circuit.

Big field and the only place I could hope to escape was on the hill and also the drag shortly after Newdigate, so did that most laps but to no avail as the hills are too short and most people were intent on chasing not breaking away (and possibly also me not strong enough!). Did escape shortly a couple times with a few others but never significantly. Other groups did too, the last one nearer the end which looked like it was going to work, then we got them in sight and left them dangling 100m ahead for most of the last lap. Keith had a good attempt towards the end but that didn't work either. I’d let myself slip back to recover behind the wheel of a carefully chosen big guy but then panicked and realised I needed to move up pronto for the finish when I saw how far back I was.

Thankfully I’d asked Keith where exactly said finish was, as previous lap I still thought it was on the main lap – then I misheard him and thought we were to take a left turn – in fact it was a right. Still, managed to get decently placed, the draggy hill to the finish seemed far too long, then there was a big crash whilst we were launching the sprint, right in front of me, skilfully avoided the carnage and tried to keep up with the four ahead of me but just couldn’t and had to let them contest the win, looked back and there was no-one immediately challenging from behind, so was able to roll the last 10m for 5th (was happy with that but getting bored of coming 5th! Must work on sprint ..). Avs 40.7km/h.

Doing Bletchingley next week which should be more entertaining!

Cats 2/3- 90km
James Wakelin (La Fuga -Sigma Sport) timed his finishing sprint to perfection waiting for the last 100 draggy uphill metres to come around the lead sprinters for a fine win.
