Garmin Maps

A colleague has just bought a Garmin Edge 800 but we noticed that the map does not have cycle paths through parks etc, which seems a bit odd since its for a bike. Does anyone have a recommended map that should be used instead?

I have the older 705, and found Garmin maps very limited once you go offroad. I use http://www.openstreetmap.org/(open source, community edited like Wikipedia) but don't know if you can get them into an 800. Try http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_ ... n/Download

I've got a Garmin Etrex Hcx and have got Garmin City Navigator 2011 european mapping and an OSM map with some added extras from Andy Gates on the YACF forum.

Here is the link to download Andy's OSM maps that include bridleways etc:
http://ravenfamily.org/andyg/maps/ obviously, it's best he downloads the most recent uk one.

The Garmin map I have is an unlocked *free* version. I hate the fact that Garmin expect cyclists to buy mapping after paying hundreds of pounds for a cycling gps unit. I'd like to see them try that in the car gps market.

I have the OSM map on a 2gb micro sd and the Garmin mapping on a separate 4gb micro sd and just swap them for road and mtb.
If he picks up a couple of cheap micro sd cards, it's an easy job.
all he will need to do is create a folder named "Garmin" on the card and then copy the .img file into the folder.
