Meant to say the Tories under Thatcher - not this current wet lot. 'New Labour' was too Tory for me.

[quote="Amy"]I think the rot started under the Tories - and 'New Labour' didn't help being led by Tory Blair. It's all about consumerism and want want want

That's be cause he used to be a young conservative and also 'Tony Blair MP' rearranged is 'I'm Tory Plan B', so really no surprise there.

I thought there was a "no politics" rule on here.

I was going to take Tom to watch the racing at Palace tonight - so he could see if he wants to have a go some time. Might leave it I think.

Apparently a mob has been seen in Penge/Crystal Palace area, so maybe not a good idea.

Paul H started it but I've said my piece and won't say anymore, promise.

[quote]dont think it is about consumerism. Its more than that. Benefit dependancy, non working culture, thinking the country owes you something, over population, soft on crime - all the things Labour are responsible for.
:D

Anyway, I think it is a consequence of a number of factors, the main one being that they don't see any real meaningful future, so not worried about getting a record, anyway prisons are overcrowded and cost money (prison services is also being subject to cuts, as are the judiciary) so hard on crime is not really an option. More police = more costs. Maybe they read about excess wealth of individuals and then look at themselves and their friends, maybe they think "f**k this".

Labour left in a mess? Sorry, but thats utter bollocks. The rampant disregard for regulation and taking measured risks by the Tories best mates, investment bankers, did it for the K. Labour is complicit in reinforcing the culture Thatcher and Major handed them.

Sean you're a good bloke but sometimes tend to talk out of your arse. However, as a wiser man than me once said, let's keep politics off the forum, especially when "debate" is fuelled by economic illiteracy of such gargantuan proportions as to deserve more pity than scorn.

Well he's clearly a running-dog lackey of the bourgeoisie.

Londoncyclesport are reporting that the racing at Palace has been cancelled for tonight "on police advice".

I'm trying to work out a route home without going through any dodgy areas.
So far I'm failing.

Coming down Walworth Rd this morning there were 4 or 5 shops taped off with a policeman outside having been hit last night - bookies, jewellers, cash convertors etc.

I shall be living on time tonight to get through and home before the neighbouring Peckham natives get restless again.

In Clapham (northcote road end) there was a crowd gathering but it's people wanting to have a look at last night's damage.
Wandsworth, Brixton and Penge were okay passing through them earlier despite some twitter reports.
Dodgy driving and lots of traffic throughout. Nice to get home. :D

Well since you haven't deleted the original offending posts and left them there for everyone to see, I'll say my bit anyway - otherwise I wouldn't have bothered.......I'll leave it to you to use your admin skills to silence me.

I thought your first post was obviously a joke and I chuckled when I read it, but on reading your second post I can see that perhaps you are actually serious. Now is not the time to score cheap party political points, and clearly both the Tories and New Labour have a responsibility for the sort of society we have today.

But if you want to try to understand much of what is wrong today then you can start by pointing the finger at ill-informed people who make ill thought out comments and are plainly guilty of tabloid-fuelled knee-jerk reactions.

The situation were are witnessing was always eventually going to arrive, whichever party was in power - it's been a pressure cooker ready to explode for a very long time. Youth unemployment stands at almost 1 million, the highest ever. And the total amount of young people not not working, including those studying etc, is 3 million, ie 3 million young people not earning any wages at all. Despite that, today's youth are sold the false unachievable dreams of fame and wealth. They are told day in and day out that they should aspire to own vast amounts of material wealth, and that to aspire for anything less than that represents failure.

And yet youth in huge swathes of our communities are given zero chance of achieving anything. Employers would rather opt for the easier and cheaper alternative of offering jobs to fully trained EU nationals, than to give British school-leavers any hope of learning a trade/skill. This attitude is backed up by those who let their tabloid newspapers do their thinking for them, and who at any given opportunity vilify young people dismissing them all as chavs, lazy, feckless, etc.

Well all the pent-up frustrations have finally turned ugly, and very ugly too - with the first confirmed fatality in Croydon. But no one should be very surprised - did anyone really think we could cripple Britain's youth and then taunt them for being lame indefinitely ? And blaming it all on the Tories, or all on New Labour, is far too simplistic. We haven't arrived where we are today because of something which happened before or since May last year - we need to go much further back, years, if not decades.

The only thing which has happened recently is that the crises has become more acute.

the only thing that is to blame is the upbringing of our youth. (most were teens not old to work yet) what i mean is when the kids come home last night with a 47in TV what do you thing the parents say.. did they give them a pat on the back and say well done son.. these are the things to blame not the police or the government :x
