Leith Hill oil drilling - the return

Postby ceejay » Tue Jan 19, 2010 7:40 pm

All (especially MTBers),

There was some debate about the plans to explore for oil on Leith Hill when they emerged this summer (on this thread viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9650). It's fair to say opinion in ACC was divided.

I've not seen any further posts about it here, but the plans have now been revised and any objections (there were about 1500) from the first time around could be considered invalidated by the changed proposals. The Leith Hill Action Group is urging people to object again http://www.thevirtualvillage.com/final_deadline.cfm

Closing date for comments is the 25 Jan.

I had a quick look the original submission and apart from any environmental concerns, ColdHarbour Lane (ie) Leith Hill tarmac climb, would have "traffic controls" for 4-5 months which is at least one way traffic lights but also road closures.

Earth moving trucks and low loaders are big vehicles for this road and it would probably be best avoiding the road for the period. At peak time it would be one truck every 30mins and considering it would take about 5 -10 mins to get up with queuing points at top and bottom. Not very pleasant if you're on a bike and very dangerous if they lost control.

Must admit I missed this news some weeks ago but am relieved now to see that this will not be going ahead. Apologies if already posted.
