Re. discipline and respect: OK I'm biased because my wife and many of my relatives are teachers, but bear in mind that kids spend a tiny proportion of their time in school. And if kids go into school with the idea that teachers are not to be respected then there's s0d-all that teachers can do to address that. And how many professions are you strongly encouraged not to report it if you are assaulted at work?

This is something that's been brewing for 30 years or more. It can't be sorted out overnight.

I see our intrepid PM, on his fleeting visit to our green and pleasant land, has given the Police powers to ask rioters and looters to remove their face-coverings.

"I have also asked the police if they need any other new powers.
Specifically on facemasks, currently they can only remove these in a specific geographical location and for a limited time.
So I can announce today that we are going to give the police the discretion to remove face coverings under any circumstances where there is reasonable suspicion that they are related to criminal activity".

Load of cr*p that article, lets all go back to some mythical past of happy families, full employment, where women and children knew their place, and where child abuse, wife beatings etc was all hidden and not reported, happy families indeed. Especially stupid it that attack on multiculturism, looking around the world most cultures seem to value law and order, family life etc. Looking at who and where the looting took place, to say it has nothing to do with social exclusion, poverty is mad, I didn't see the children in Dulwich, Richmond, our nice bit of forest hill out there? My neighbour's children, both teenagers of a divorced Mum weren't involved. As the American critic, Henry Louis Mencken said:

The breakdown of family life and what the sneering liberal, tofu-munching, islington guardianistas call "traditional values" is largely to blame. This has been encouraged by successive governments since the 70s.

These rioters and looters aren't "poor" in the true sense of the word. Go to any sink estate and count the number of sky dishes on the walls.

For balance there's the usual stream of incontinent arsewater on the guardian website about how we should try to "understand the rioters", give 'em a cuddle and hand them more benefits.

funny, I see it as a consequence of promoting greed and self interest, creating a hyper comsumer driven society (guess which party I mean here) where social values of community were not promoted. Where the stars are mulitmillionaires from the world of pro sports, entertainment and business. Scientists and other less glamourous professions not promoted or aspired to.

I actually agree with part of that, although be careful of mentioning parties otherwise this excellent thread may be locked or posts deleted by our moderator.
Nothing wrong with aspiring to be a business multimillionaire - it might encourage the little f***ers to work a bit harder in school. A couple of ASBOs and a GCSE in getting the class bike up the duff might impress the local hoodrats but probably not the best attitude to start a business and make some money.
